Our City of Folsom is located 20 miles east of Sacramento, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The library is part of a vibrant, family‑oriented community known for excellent schools, parks, and cultural amenities.

The Folsom Public Library is hiring Library Assistant to support daily library operations. The position is full‑time, operating Tuesday‑Saturday with two rotating shifts: 8:40 am – 5:10 pm and 10:40 am – 7:10 pm. The role is non‑exempt and part of Local 39 IUOE.

Responsibilities

  • Check out and check in library materials to patrons.
  • Register patrons, verify eligibility, and enter information into the database.
  • Respond to patrons in person and by telephone regarding requests, services, and information, and refer complex inquiries to a supervisor.
  • Instruct patrons in the use of library equipment, including computers and photocopiers.
  • Respond to patron questions about library policies.
  • Prepare print and non‑print materials for introduction into the collection, including basic cataloging, and assist patrons in locating items.
  • Affix identification labels to materials.
  • Assist in the acquisition, processing, and maintenance of periodical and material collections.
  • Collect fines and fees and count monies.
  • Repair materials such as magazines and books, including reinforcing spines and taping torn pages.
  • Maintain catalog, records, and other files.
  • Gather mis‑shelved and displaced items.
  • Locate, retrieve, and shelve books and other materials using index and catalog guides.
  • Participate in the preparation and maintenance of displays and exhibits.
  • Assist in giving group tours to children, parents, and organizations.
  • Assist with the delivery of various library programs.
  • Follow opening and closing procedures of the library.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards – Knowledge & Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Basic library techniques.
  • Standard public library procedures, including cataloging, bibliographic search procedures, and the use of reference sources.
  • Modern office procedures and computer equipment.
  • Alphabetical, numerical, and chronological filing systems.
  • Basic mathematics principles.
  • Record‑keeping practices and principles.
  • Common word‑processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

Abilities

  • Learn computerized cataloging, bibliographic, and circulation databases and rules for entry of materials.
  • Learn library practices and procedures.
  • Learn location of materials in the library.
  • Work accurately with alphanumeric codes.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Assist patrons in the location and use of library materials.
  • Type with sufficient speed for successful work performance.
  • Operate a personal computer and use software.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One (1) year of full‑time customer service experience.

Physical

  • Frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting and standing for long periods; occasional bending or squatting.
  • Frequently lift up to 10 lb; occasionally up to 25 lb.
  • Static use of vision: frequent reading and close‑up work; occasional color and depth vision.
  • Frequent repetitive motion, writing, grasping, holding, and reaching.
  • Frequent hearing and talking, in person and on the phone.
  • Decision‑making and concentration; frequent public or coworker contact; occasional work alone.
  • Frequent exposure to noise.
