POSITION SUMMARYAn employee in this position performs library circulation tasks and provides information services to the public through modern library techniques and technology for the Erwin Branch Library. Work involves demonstrating excellent customer service skills while assisting patrons with technology, working at the circulation desk, searching for information, programming, and performing other library service needs. This position is responsible for planning and executing adult programs at the branch with support from library management.
Duties and Responsibilities- Works directly with the public.
- Contributes to the planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive range of youth services programs, including early literacy storytimes, STEAM activities, teen and school‑age programs, summer reading programs, and cultural events.
- Assists patrons in person and by phone.
- Greets and assists patrons with library‑related services.
- Provides reference and readers’ advisory services.
- Provides support to library patrons in online searches, using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and accessing other electronic resources.
- Assists with the library’s print management system.
- Retrieves items from the outside book drop.
- Organizes library materials and returns items to the appropriate locations.
- Works with various office equipment including fax machine, copier, and computer.
- Researches related genres for suggested reading.
- Performs circulation duties; registers new patrons; checks items in and out; collects lost item and damage fees; reserves library materials for patrons; searches the catalogue; and manages patron accounts.
- Photocopies and faxes information.
- Sanitizes and tidies areas that patrons frequent.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Assists in promoting library services, programs, and resources through creative displays, marketing, and social media.
- Assists in cultivating community partnerships and coordinating outreach and community engagement opportunities.
- Knowledge of computers and the Internet.
- Knowledge of basic library filing systems.
- Skill in delivering customer service.
- Ability to assist the public with computers.
- Ability to plan and implement creative programming for children and teens.
- Demonstrates a strong ability to work independently, taking initiative to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to achieve goals without direct supervision.
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Experience in a library or a customer service setting and children’s programming preferred.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Must be able to perform light work frequently exerting up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and occasionally requiring to exert up to 20 pounds of force to move objects. This work also involves the physical abilities of crouching, gripping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, discriminating among sounds, kneeling, lifting, having manual dexterity, using mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word, and walking. An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to analyze data, work with color or depth perception, determine accuracy, and work with computer.
Work EnvironmentThe employee works in a library environment. Job duties require working an assigned schedule which could be a combination of mornings, afternoons, and evening work as well as weekends in addition to working at various locations such as the main branch in Lillington and other branch libraries.
