Time Commitment Typically scheduled during these times: Sunday, 2:45pm-10:15pm and Monday - Thursday, 3:00pm-10:15pm. Finals week until 11:15pm. Sunday and evening availability required. Some daytime hours, as needed.

Position Summary

Attends to library tasks including shelving, shelf reading, archival processing and digitization, new materials processing, checking materials in and out, performing inventory-related tasks, and providing service to library patrons. This is a student worker position. The position usually requires 7-15 hours per week.

Essential Functions

  • Harvests and digitizes materials for the NU Archives.
  • Shelf reads assigned areas, searches for lost and missing items, facing & dusting.
  • Assists with circulation tasks including sorting and shelving materials, processing holds, discharging materials, interlibrary loans.
  • Prepares new materials for circulation or withdrawal.
  • Answers patron questions and performs basic service on printers, copiers, and computers.
  • Performs basic data cleanup and special projects.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Performs opening and closing procedures daily.

Education/Experience/Skills

  • Must be currently enrolled at NU.
  • Must have excellent attention to detail, the ability to follow complex instructions and have good hand-eye coordination.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and ability to learn complex software programs such as Photoshop, Audacity, and ABBYY FineReader.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, or by email, and maintain professional interaction with co-workers and patrons.
  • Demonstrate commitment to maintaining a safe work environment free of harassment, violence, and unlawful discrimination.
  • Must be willing to participate in University provided safety training and install emergency messaging application.
  • Work is generally performed indoors in a typical office setting.
  • Position works with some confidential information.
  • Frequently required to be in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.

Physical Demands

The functions are usually performed while standing or sitting, but may require some amount of time stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting (max. of 40 lbs.), walking, carrying, reaching, stretching, climbing, performing repetitive motions of the hands or wrists and other movements.
