Position Overview Adjunct Faculty, MA in Writing – Advanced Academic Programs (AAP), Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Johns Hopkins University
Institution Description Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of the Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. AAP offers high‑quality master’s and certificate programs at its Washington, D.C., Center, the Homewood Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and online. With nearly 6,000 students enrolled annually in over 45 programs, AAP distinguishes itself through intensive instructional assistance, selective admissions, and a dedicated faculty core of 60 full‑time members. Tenured Krieger faculty serve as program chairs to oversee the academic rigor of AAP’s graduate offerings.
Position Description The Advanced Academic Programs division seeks non‑tenure‑track adjunct faculty to teach courses within the MA in Writing program. Classes are offered online—both asynchronously via Canvas and in real‑time via Zoom. We are looking for fiction and nonfiction writers who have published extensively. The ideal candidate will have published at least one book, possess online teaching experience, and especially value engaging students from diverse backgrounds.
Courses Fiction Workshop – 490.660 Fiction workshops emphasize intensive writing and revision. Students submit short stories or novel chapters for critique and participant peers provide detailed feedback. Two to three submissions per semester and required revisions are typical.
Nonfiction Workshop – 490.670 Students gain extensive experience in factual writing, revising essays, articles, or book chapters. They submit 2‑4 pieces per semester; revisions, exercises, and readings are required.
Writing Memoir & Personal Essay Workshop – 490.693 Students experiment with memoir and personal essay, developing voice and style through seminal essays. This workshop counts toward one of the three required nonfiction courses.
Heritage of Literature – Examining the 20th Century – 490.684 Explores the historical development of fiction and nonfiction from a craft perspective, emphasizing social and cultural contexts and literary giants like William Carlos Williams, T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, and others.
Voice in Fiction and Nonfiction – 490.745 Examines voice in both creative and factual writing, addressing style, point of view, tone, structure, and cultural influence. Assignments include responses, original writing, and oral presentations.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Advanced degree in creative writing, English, or journalism (master’s degree minimum)
1‑3 years of higher‑education teaching experience in fiction or nonfiction courses
Extensive publication record (electronic or print) of original fiction or nonfiction in popular press, literary journals, and/or book form
Preferred Qualifications
Terminal degree in Fiction Writing or a related field such as Creative Writing or English
1‑3 years of graduate‑level creative‑writing teaching experience
Online teaching experience
Familiarity with Canvas
Background to teach a wide variety of writing courses

Salary Range Base salary range for this position is $10,000.00–$11,000.00. The actual offer may vary based on location, skills, experience, and market conditions.
