High School Vocational Teacher – Design & Visual Communications Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership is seeking a qualified High School Vocational Teacher to instruct in Design & Visual Communications.

Teaching Scope Teach the following Vocational Technical Education Framework Strands:

Strand One: Safety and Health Knowledge

Strand Two: Technical Standards Knowledge and Skills

Strand Three: Embedded Academics

Strand Four: Employability

Strand Five: Management and Entrepreneurship

Strand Six: Technology

Job Goal To help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, responsible, and productive citizens.

Responsibilities

Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at times designated.

Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.

Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.

Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established district curriculum goals, establish and communicate clear objectives to the students for all lessons, units and projects.

Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor as required by the teachers’ contract.

Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.

Strive in instruction and action to implement the district’s philosophy of education, instructional goals and objectives and performance expectations.

Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis; provide progress reports as required and communicate with parents as deemed necessary.

Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.

Diagnose the learning challenges of students regularly, seeking assistance from district specialists as required.

Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Follow the SPS code of conduct for the classroom, consistent with established administrative policies, and develop rules of classroom behavior that are enforced fairly and justly.

Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals, and make written evaluations as required.

Maintain an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies district requirements and personal professional expectations.

Take an active part in the contractually-approved teacher evaluation process, contributing to a mutual agreement concerning the results of that evaluation.

Attend building and district meetings to promote communication and mutual decision making among the staff during the extended day.

Attend traditional school-sponsored activities (e.g., Back to School Night, Open House, programs, activities) as agreed upon by the building administrator and faculty, consistent with the teachers’ contract.

Contribute to district and building decisions regarding budget, facilities, curriculum, and personal well‑being.

Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.

Qualifications

Associate degree or higher related to subject matter and skills to be taught.

Four years recent (within the last seven) full‑time employment experience directly related to design and visual communications.

Passing score of at least 70% on the written and performance tests for licensure.

Passing score on the Vocational Technical Literacy (VTLST) and the Communication and Literacy Skills Test.

Design and Visual Communications (9‑14) license requirements expected to be completed as soon as possible from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
