1st Class Marine Electrician – Interior Communications (≈50% Travel) Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is looking for a 1st Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, Virginia.

Travel 50% travel required within and outside of the continental United States.

Work Schedule Monday through Saturday, 10 hours a day as needed.

Responsibilities

Install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including interior communications.

Maintain and repair electrical systems on marine vessels.

Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities.

Apply advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems that cannot be solved solely by reference to manufacturers' manuals.

Determine location and density of circuitry; evaluate electromagnetic radiation; isolate malfunctions; incorporate engineering changes.

Analyze circuits, calculate waveforms, trace relationships in signal flow, using complex test instruments such as high‑frequency pulse generators, frequency synthesizers, distortion analyzers, and computer‑controlled equipment.

Provide technical guidance to lower‑level technicians as required.

Display consistent levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance.

Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment for fleet modernization on U.S. Navy surface ships.

Lay out, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, and fiber optic onboard Navy vessels.

Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, engineering sketches, work orders, technical documents, test reports, and trip reports.

Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables.

Remove and install cables found overhead, along bulkheads, or under the deck.

Repair and replace cables/connectors.

Apply understanding of production processes toward the completion of complicated, non‑routine installation tasks on shipboard systems at company or field locations.

Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.

Maintain effective communication with supervisors and managers.

Plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels.

Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections for new installations.

Qualifications

DoD Secret clearance.

High‑school diploma, GED, or industrial/trade school certificate.

Five to seven years of experience operating, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems on-board Navy vessels, U.S. Coast Guard vessels, MSC or maritime vessels, and practical ship‑board experience with HM&E systems and equipment.

Familiarity with one or more Interior Communications (IC) systems:

MC (General Announcing/Mass Communications)

HYDRA (Hierarchical Yet Dynamically Reprogrammable Architecture)

IVN (Integrated Voice Network)

IVCN (Integrated Voice Communications Network)

SATCC (Shipboard Air Traffic Control Communications)

SIWCS (Shipwide Inter Wireless Communication System)

Past supervisory experience is a plus.

Ability to acquire and maintain a DBIS credential for work on U.S. Naval vessels.

Willingness to work overtime and weekends upon managerial request.

Willingness to travel outside the Suffolk, Virginia area if required.

Prior experience with fiber‑optic cables and multi‑pin connectors.

Possess relevant trade‑specific hand tools.

Experience working in a team environment and good communication skills.

Understanding and ability to accomplish NSI 009‑73 requirements:

Inspection, testing, installation, removal, and repair of ship‑board electrical cabling and electronic equipment.

Cable installations including banding, terminal boxes, connection boxes, connectors, equipment, penetrations, cableways, hangers and associated components.

MCT, MCP, and stuffing tube opening, packing, closing, and testing.

Bonding and grounding of electrical equipment.

NSI 009‑25 – Air testing of penetrations.

Electrical troubleshooting and testing using multimeters and megohmmeters.

Experience assisting with troubleshooting, maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical distribution systems and associated equipment and cabling.

Experience with cable removal and installation, including proper methods for opening and securing various cable penetrations.

Ability to work under instruction removing, installing, and modifying electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, cable penetrations, and equipment aboard naval vessels.

Familiarity with reading electrical drawings and schematics.

Familiarity with proper and safe use of multimeters and meggers.

Familiarity with NAVSEA standard items.

Preferred Qualifications

Current NAVSEA Multipin Connector Certification (NSI 009‑73).

Current NAVSEA Fiber‑Optic Certification (NSI 009‑123).

Current NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications.

Graduated from or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program.

Current or active DoD Secret clearance.

OSHA 10 Maritime Certification.

Microsoft Office knowledge.

Physical Demands

Lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 30 lb).

Work on and climb ladders; work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces.

Perform duties involving high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions; work aloft or over vessel sides.

May ride ships at sea for extended periods.

May require wearing a respirator.

50% travel required within and outside of the continental United States.
