Responsibilities
Process emergency and non‑emergency calls for service; dispatch police, firefighting, medical, rescue, animal control, or other emergency equipment via telephone or radio using CAD and crime information databases.
Answer incoming emergency and non‑emergency calls and two‑way radio transmissions; analyze conflicting or limited location information to direct first responders to the emergency scene.
Interview callers, prioritize calls for service, determine appropriate personnel to respond, and dispatch calls for service.
Relay pertinent information to first responders in a concise manner and provide assistance to the public within the scope of authority.
Gather, analyze, and report critical call information to officers and firefighters; maintain status and awareness of Police and Fire units; continuously monitor radio and phone traffic and relay updated vital information to first responders.
Perform inquiries and criminal history checks for officers through TCIC & NCIC; initiate inquiries to other agencies for warrant confirmations or general information.
Enter data for records and reports; process forms and record files; query specialized databases as required.
Activate protective protocols for first responders by providing life‑safety information during responses such as active shooter, MAYDAY, and officer‑down calls.
Negotiate with and defuse emotional callers, including suicidal subjects or hostage takers.
Notify supervisory personnel on critical incidents; follow all Department policies and procedures to assure that first responder and citizen safety is the top priority.
Maintain confidentiality as proscribed by legal statute, agency policy, or other governing directives.
Arrive to work on time and maintain a regular and reliable level of attendance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
Familiarity with equipment utilized in law‑enforcement communications, including radio, computer, and dispatch equipment.
Knowledge of National Incident Management and the Incident Command System.
Understanding of law‑enforcement patrol procedures.
Knowledge of the city geographical area, road systems, and locations of landmarks.
Knowledge of Police and Fire Departments’ standard dispatch policies and procedures.
Understanding of basic laws and regulations governing the release of information from law‑enforcement agency records.
Familiarity with law‑enforcement and fire agency reports and records, including retention and confidentiality requirements.
High school graduation or equivalent.
Completion of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Telecommunicator License Course.
A valid Class C Texas driver license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.
