Afar is looking for a senior editor to join its editorial team.
The senior editor will bring new writers to the pages of Afar, develop distinctive story ideas, edit everything from middle-of-book packages to ambitious long-form features, and translate print content to other platforms. The ideal candidate should possess 6+ years of print experience and be excited to work on stories from inception through to proofs. They will work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment, coordinating with other editors and reporting to the executive editor.
Responsibilities Assigning articles
Story and line editing
Story packaging
Headline, dek, caption, and sidebar writing
Managing story budgets
Overseeing at least four packages or roundups a year, in print and online
Cultivating relationships with writers from a diverse range of backgrounds and identities
Developing content calendars in collaboration with executive editor and editorial director
Conceptualizing how stories might live across all editorial platforms
Working with the art team on story framing and layouts
Acting as brand representative at industry events and meetings
Note: This role does not guarantee travel.
Requirements Minimum 5 years hands-on print editing experience
5-8 years working in a deadline-driven, journalism environment
Sharp line editing, story shaping, and packaging skills
Demonstrated ability assigning and editing packages across platforms
Reporting experience and knowledge of fact-checking best practices
Meticulous attention to detail and grammar
Ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously
Ability to write clear, engaging copy and help others to do the same
Agility in editing skills, from a one-page roundup to a longform feature
Extremely organized and able to adhere to tight deadlines
Excellent communication skills and ability to cooperate effectively with staff and freelancers in a remote work environment
Experience assigning and commissioning articles
Experience working in a CMS, InCopy, Asana, and Slack
Experience writing newsletters
Experience scriptwriting and capturing footage for social video
Must have a passion for travel, and be interested in conceptualizing new and interesting ways to create travel storytelling
