Overview The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to building community through the art and craft of storytelling. For nearly 30 years, The Moth has presented more than thirty thousand stories, told live and without notes, by people from all walks of life to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. Beyond live events, The Moth connects listeners through our Peabody Award-Winning Moth Radio Hour heard on public radio stations nationwide and with The Moth Podcast . Our Education and Community Engagement Programs partner with schools and other non-profits to teach storytelling to young people and community groups, while MothWorks develops workshops and private events for corporate partners.

Department overview The Moth’s Production Department oversees the planning and execution of the organization’s hundreds of annual live events each year. Members of the Production Department work collaboratively with each other and across departments to successfully and strategically bring The Moth’s artistic vision to life on stages across the world.
The Moth Production Department Produce s 3 different kinds of ticketed events:
StorySLAM - Community-focused open-mic storytelling competitions in which anyone can share a five-minute story on the night’s theme.
GrandSLAM - Ten StorySLAM winners in a given city are invited to take the GrandSlam stage for the ultimate storytelling competition.
Mainstage - Curated events featuring five tellers who develop and shape their stories with our Directors. Beyond theater, The Moth Mainstage is a community where entertainment and enlightenment merge.
Position Overview The Moth seeks a candidate with 3 - 6 years of work experience to join our production team as a full-time Associate Producer. The Associate Producer will provide production support, strategic thinking and industry experience to the production team with a specific focus on live event production, event promotion and scheduling, and database management. The Associate Producer will manage designated StorySLAM markets and produce Moth Mainstages and other Moth events. They will also be responsible for managing all ticketing needs for The Moth’s live events; which includes ticketing operations across multiple markets and platforms, manage customer service queries related to ticketing, and liaise with ticketing partners for externally ticketed events.
Please note that this role is not directly involved in the production of The Moth Podcast or The Moth Radio Hour.
Responsibilities StorySLAM Production and Management
Oversee all ticketing systems for StorySLAM markets, including but not limited to; creation of ticketing links, liaising with venues for ticketing needs, website entry, database maintenance and management.
Supervise an assigned number of StorySLAM communities, with responsibilities that include, but are not limited to: Manage the StorySLAM working budget to accurately reflect ticket sales, expenses and number of shows in each market.
Review, track and report StorySLAM financials ensuring invoices are in order, in collaboration with Finance team
Hire subcontractors in regional SLAM communities, as needed
Hire, train, and manage regional StorySLAM producers
Manage media partner relationships
Research new venues and negotiate contracts
Ongoing evaluation of each assigned StorySLAM community throughout the year, including ticket sales, marketing and promotion, and local outreach In response to each evaluation, propose and implement solutions as necessary
Assist in brainstorming and implementing plan to increase national StorySLAM awareness, attendance, and audience diversity
Listen and screen StorySLAM and Mainstage stories for potential broadcast consideration
Assist in hiring, training, and managing of production interns
On site production of StorySLAM events in NYC
Travel for new StorySLAM community launches and/or when strategically appropriate
Lead and produce specialty events including showcases, GrandSLAMs, or one-off events
Mainstage Production
Produce Moth Mainstages from top to bottom, including but not limited to: Working in collaboration with the Mainstage Director to deliver on the artistic vision
Managing the event budget and submitting financial reconciliations in a timely manner
Overseeing the marketing and promotion schedule with the Marketing team
Presenting partner relationship management
Coordinating travel and box office ticketing
Researching and hiring subcontractors
Closely working with lighting and audio visual technicians to meet the event requirements
Running rehearsal and pre-show sound check
Experience/Skills required Required:
Strong experience in Production Management; minimally three years of live event production experience
Strong experience in budget management
Excellent organizational skills, detail, and deadline-oriented
Excellent analytical and writing skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to gather and organize information from a variety of sources and formats in a digestible way
Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment
Sensitivity to different perspectives and an ability to communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds
Proficiency in Google Suite (Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.); and Excel
Preferred:
Experience with Salesforce, Eventbrite, Airtable, Adobe Acrobat, and Mailchimp
Associate's or Bachelor's Degree
Valid driver’s license and comfort driving
Valid passport for international travel
Enthusiasm and energy for engaging, exploring, and initiating new ideas and active collaboration with members of the production team and other Moth staff on new and existing projects
Salary: $64,000/year. The salary for this position is dependent on a variety of factors including relevant experience, organization needs, and internal pay equity. This salary is a part of a competitive total rewards structure inclusive of medical, dental, and vision coverage, generous PTO, sick leave, and a retirement savings plan after one year of service.
