About the Organization
The organization exists to provide meals, supportive services and housing assistance to Detroit community members in need, especially those experiencing homelessness. On an average day the organization welcomes over 200 guests and provides them with nutritious meals, showers, laundry and access to doctors, dentists, lawyers and housing providers through their free clinics. The organization has been serving Detroit's most vulnerable citizens for over 30 years and envisions a Detroit without homelessness where every person has the resources for sustained stability.
About the Role
The Grant Writer & Relationship Manager reports to the Director of Philanthropy and assists with fundraising activities related to institutional and individual giving and manages grant cycles from prospecting through reporting results. The position is part of the Development Team which is responsible for fundraising direct mail, special events, crowdfunding, grants and individual gifts as well as donor cultivation and stewardship, donor record keeping and prospecting, and overall marketing and communications.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit and manage grant proposals to public, private and corporate foundations.
- Perform prospect research on foundations and corporations both locally and nationally to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants.
- Work with organization leadership to gather information necessary to report to funders on current programs.
- Comply with all grant reporting as required by each funder.
- Work with Development Team to provide stewardship to current donors.
- Maintain a detailed understanding of organizational history, programs and future goals.
- Build and maintain relationships with corporate and foundation donors.
- Work with Executive Director and Director of Institutional Advancement to schedule appointments with foundation officers and prospects as well as arrange for onsite visits for supporters or prospective supporters.
- Work with program staff to identify and / or develop new initiatives that are of interest to donors.
- Maintain current records in the database and separate files including grant tracking, reporting and timelines.
- Assist with other fundraising projects as requested.
- Manage a portfolio of individual donors to cultivate, steward and solicit.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience with grant writing and a proven track record.
- Strong written communication skills and ability to write clear, structured, articulate and persuasive proposals.
- Strong editing skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with fundraising prospect research preferable.
- Ability to meet deadlines and monitor and meet income goals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
