Deputy Managing Editor, Culture & Community

American Public Media Group invites applications for a Deputy Managing Editor (DME) to lead the Culture & Community Team. The DME will report to the Managing Editor, News and collaborate with newsroom leadership to guide editorial direction, produce impactful journalism across audio, video, digital and social channels, and develop diverse stories that reflect all voices in Minnesota.

Expected Compensation Range: $120,000 – $135,000 USD annualized. Work Location: On‑site, St. Paul, MN. Application Deadline: Until filled.

Position Responsibilities

  • Build coverage plans and content strategies for diverse communities to grow MPR News’s reach across multiple channels.
  • Supervise, coach and hold staff accountable for high‑quality writing, audio and text storytelling.
  • Manage publishing workflows and coordinate with internal partners on strategy, production, visual, data and legal review.
  • Partner with news and community partners throughout the region, sharing coverage plans and content.
  • Lead editorial meetings, set coverage priorities with other editors and extend expertise to others.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or related field.
  • Five years of editorial or supervisory news experience.
  • Ten years of journalism reporting or producing experience.
  • Experience leading teams and managing major news processes and coverage plans.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • High journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including objectivity, balance and fairness.
  • Proficient in AP style editing, fact‑checking and news gathering.
  • Ability to inspire, mentor and build successful teams.
  • Experience covering diverse and complex issues across broad community perspectives.
  • Multichannel journalism experience, including audio, digital and social.
  • Capability to handle breaking and challenging news events.
  • Use of audience engagement tools and methods to incorporate findings.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion in support of organizational goals.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Prior audio editing experience.
  • Audience engagement and growth strategy across channels.
  • News leadership or management experience.
  • Data journalism experience or training.
  • Knowledge of Spanish, Somali, Hmong or other popular Minnesota languages.
  • Proficiency with social media channels.
  • Experience with digital content management systems.
