Pittsburg State University invites applications for the Library Assistant position in the Department of Library Services.

The primary function is to assist with the acquisition, bibliographic control, physical processing, and management of new and old print materials for Library Services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • 30% Periodical Process and Electronic Record Keeping:
    • Receive, process, and record new issues of serials, periodicals, journals, newspapers, and microforms.
    • Modify or update electronic item records for these materials in the library’s online catalog and in state and national databases to provide accurate information on library holdings.
    • Monitor titles for publication frequency and title changes.
  • 25% Cataloging Process and Record Entry:
    • Entry of item records into the online catalog and physical processing of cataloged monographs and other materials.
    • Typing of flags and labels.
    • Entry of add-on materials when items are added to existing catalog records.
  • 20% Communication, Management, and Supervision:
    • Communicate with subscription agencies to facilitate prompt replacement of missing or damaged periodicals and serials.
    • Manage other daily operations for serials and periodicals such as compiling statistical reports, ordering supplies, filing forms, processing items received in daily mail, and related clerical duties.
    • Train and provide daily oversight of student workers in the department.
  • 10% Acquisitions Receiving and Gift Materials:
    • Receive incoming books, check them against the invoice, and enter them into the cataloging workflow.
    • Maintain standing order tracking on a spreadsheet.
    • Receive and process gift materials, maintain donor lists, and create donor and gift correspondence.
  • 10% De-accession:
    • Assist with de-accessioning materials from the online catalog by removing item records and OCLC holdings records, as well as weeding of physical volumes.
    • Assist with other database maintenance in the online catalog.
  • 5% Bound Periodicals Preservation:
    • Schedule, collect, and prepare for shipping periodicals and serials to be bound into physical volumes for preservation purposes.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Required: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Required: One year of related experience.

Preferred

  • Two-year college or technical degree.

Job Type: Unclassified

Salary: $15.03 per hour, commensurate with experience

Appointment Duration: 12 months

Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday – Friday, occasional weekend events
