Apply to serve as the Director of the Library at the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM), under the Metropolitan New York Library Council.

Overview

The NYAM Historical Medical Library is a leading voice for innovation in population health. As Director, you will reimagine the Library’s goals, build greater engagement of its rich holdings within NYAM and beyond, and help implement the institution’s vision and strategic priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & Planning: Develop and enact a comprehensive plan for how the Library will best serve NYAM research staff, Fellows, and the wider community.
  • Team & Resource Management: Enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the Library’s team, recommend and build an effective staffing structure, manage budgets, and assist development and fundraising efforts.
  • Policy and Collections: Set priorities for collections, allocate funding, review technical infrastructure, and support digitization, exhibition, and dissemination of special collections.
  • Promotion and Communication: Conduct outreach, expand collaborations with peer institutions, enhance visibility of Library activities, and engage with NYAM’s communities.
  • Digitization and Technology: Ensure digital collections, exhibits, preservation, and cataloging are forward‑looking.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in a library or cultural heritage environment, with strategic planning and implementation.
  • Master’s degree in library or information science or a related discipline (advanced degree in history, sociology, etc. preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience in and current use of digital technologies to enhance library collections.
  • Proven ability to inspire, build trust, and manage organizational change while fostering innovation and collaboration.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, innovative problem‑solving, and commitment to service excellence.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship‑building skills across professional communities.
  • Experience in supervision, performance monitoring, coaching, counseling, and disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Budget planning and administration, human resources, and facilities and space planning experience.
  • Evidence of developing and maintaining expansive development programs, including grant applications and awards.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, mission‑driven environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Passion for health equity and commitment to advancing the organization’s mission and impact.

This position is based in New York City. Staff work in a hybrid environment with a minimum of three days a week on‑site, pending departmental needs.

NYAM offers competitive benefits, generous paid time off and holidays, professional development opportunities, and a flexible work environment. The salary range for this position is $165,000 to $185,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
