Street Smarts VR Street Smarts VR is a veteran-owned, dual-use technology platform that's revolutionizing tactical training through virtual reality and improving public safety outcomes. By integrating software, hardware, and training data, SSVR's solution is transforming the VR training landscape.

Across four continents, 10,000 users across dozens of US military and police departments currently train with SSVR - and that's a tiny fraction of the 5 million first responders in the US who carry weapons and for whom training is not just a requirement but a moral imperative. SSVR is forecasting rapid growth over the coming years in both state and local law enforcement as well as all 4 branches of the US Military.

At Street Smarts VR, we understand that military and first responders consistently operate in high stress, high consequence environments. We’ve lived it. So by leveraging virtual reality and real-world data sources, we’ve built a fully immersive platform that conditions users to the real life stressors they will face in the field.

About The Role

We’re looking for a Product Designer to lead the design of critical user experiences across our multi-user immersive training platform. This includes intuitive instructor control systems and accessible scenario creation tools. You’ll play a foundational role in shaping how design operates at SSVR—introducing repeatable design processes, conducting rapid user validation, and ensuring we build products that are easy to adopt and meaningful to use in high-stress environments.

What You’ll Work On

Immediate Product Design Challenges

Instructor Control Interfaces – Simplify and streamline multiuser tools for real-time oversight, communication, and training task management. Creator Tools – Redesign complex scenario authoring tools to make them usable for non-technical training leads. Design Process Implementation – Introduce lightweight but structured design validation processes (e.g., moderated tests, paper prototypes, internal dogfooding). User JTBD Mapping – Collaborate with product to visualize and validate the most important jobs our users (instructors, trainees, admins) need to accomplish.

What Success Looks Like

Interfaces are adopted quickly with minimal training required Internal usability testing occurs regularly before engineering begins Engineers spend less time designing UI themselves Most new features are backed by validated wireframes or prototypes User satisfaction and NPS improve over time Scenario creation time decreases measurably

What You Bring

Core Design Skills

5+ years of product design experience with a strong UI/UX portfolio Proficiency with Figma (or equivalent) for wireframes, flows, and prototypes Ability to balance interaction design, systems thinking, and usability testing Familiarity with Unity workflows (no coding required, but must collaborate fluently with Unity developers)

Backgrounds That Help

Game Design / Level Design – Experience with multiplayer, spatial, or systems-based design in 3D environments VR/AR or Simulation Design – Strong grasp of immersive usability, spatial UI, and embodied user behavior Training / Simulation / Serious Games – Especially in high-stakes or mission-critical domains Bonus: SaaS admin tooling, enterprise UX, or scenario-based authoring tools

How You Work

You are user-obsessed and synthesize interviews, testing, and field feedback into actionable design decisions. You collaborate fluidly across product, engineering, and customer teams. You bring strong product thinking—balancing business goals, technical feasibility, and user needs. You move quickly, prototype early, and validate before committing engineering resources. You communicate clearly, annotate thoroughly, and help raise the design literacy of the team. You bring structure to ambiguous or undefined product areas and help chart a way forward.
