Assistant Branch Librarian (ABL) – 24 hrs./wk.

Under the general direction of branch management, performs a variety of services in support of patron service. Specific duties vary with location.
Responsibilities
Serve the public by checking in and checking out library materials, collecting fines for lost or damaged items, issuing new or replacement library cards, registering new patrons, and processing name and address changes.
Maintain the collection: sort and shelve materials; empty book drops; shelve-read; shift and circulate materials; clean, dust, and inspect for damage; discard or repair.
Ensure circulation policies and procedures are followed and record accurate library database entries for late, lost, damaged, and claim-returned items and patron information.
Sort, pack, unpack, and inspect materials received from or sent to other libraries.
Run reports and lists for item hold information and inter‑library loan requests; provide lists to staff or other libraries and route items; contact patrons or libraries as needed.
Provide reference and information services: answer questions regarding collections, services, and policies; interpret patron needs.
Assist patrons in locating materials; provide materials advisory and reference interview services using ILS, print sources, KDL electronic databases, and online tools.
Facilitate access to KDL’s digital collection by demonstrating e‑reader devices and applications.
Provide directional information to the public and refer advance reference requests to Branch Librarians.
Communicate circulation policies, procedures, and issue referrals to patrons.
Count, balance, and record monies received at point of sale; forward reconciled funds and paperwork to Finance.
Assist patrons and staff in using library equipment and machines; perform routine maintenance and correct minor malfunctions.
Perform other clerical tasks such as materials order entry, supply ordering, word processing, filing, checking in new periodicals.
Sort and distribute U.S. and inter‑office mail.
Provide training and guidance to less experienced staff and serve as a team leader on group assignments.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Previous library or retail experience preferred.
Basic clerical skills, computer and telephone proficiency.
Knowledge of popular culture and various library material genres.
Basic mathematical skills for routine calculations.
Working knowledge of KDL policies and procedures.
Ability to work with general supervision and adhere to established policies.
Interpersonal and communication skills for courteous interaction with staff and patrons.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Leadership skills to guide less experienced circulation staff.
Visual acuity to retrieve items from shelves.
Physical ability to push/pull fully loaded book carts, retrieve or place items above shoulder or below knee level, and lift/carry up to 40 pounds.
Hearing ability to answer telephone and customer inquiries.
Manual dexterity, visual acuity, and sufficient keyboarding/PC skills to access information on the computer.
Ability to operate a variety of equipment including computer, cash register, fax, and copy machine.
Ability to travel between work locations and related places of business as needed.
Will work within a normal office environment with minimal discomfort from extreme temperatures, dust, and noise.
Occasional travel between KDL locations, including out‑of‑county travel for meetings and conferences.
Schedule: Week 1‑3: Tuesday 11:45‑8:15, Thursday 3:45‑8:15, Friday 9:15‑6:15; Week 4: add Saturday 8:45‑5:15, Sunday 12:45‑5:15.
Kent District Library provides library services to our local communities seven days per week. While this position is currently assigned to the above location, KDL reserves the right to require employees to be available for assignments at any KDL location.
