FirstEnergy, a Potomac Edison subsidiary, is seeking a Distribution Line Designer for its Martinsburg Service Center.
Base Pay Range $63,000 - $90,000 per year
About the Opportunity The Distribution Line Designer will plan and execute design work for single‑ and three‑phase overhead and underground distribution projects. Responsibilities include creating design packages, coordinating with customers and regulatory bodies, and ensuring compliance with FirstEnergy standards and regulations.
Responsibilities
Demonstrate a commitment to safety across all tasks.
Use FirstEnergy construction standards and engineering practices to produce designs meeting residential, commercial, and industrial service requests.
Support job progress through customer contacts, field work, job packages, and job closeout functions including material review and paperwork verification.
Facilitate billing functions for line extension and relocation work, including billing recommendations in non‑routine scenarios.
Complete outage management system (OMS) follow‑up requests, inspections, maintenance repairs, streetlight installations, claims, transmission priority repairs, and Job & Contracting (J&C) projects.
Acquire permits related to railroad, Department of Transportation, and municipality right‑of‑way.
Collaborate with customers to secure and document easements for line extensions and highway relocation.
Update and maintain compliant records to support technical reports, metrics, and information systems.
Travel to off‑site locations as required, including FirstEnergy offices, training facilities, and customer sites.
Provide assistance during emergencies and storm‑related activities.
Qualifications
Associate degree in a technical discipline (required).
High school diploma or equivalent with 2–6 years of related work experience in utility design (required).
Pass the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Technician Occupations Selection System (TECH) employment test.
Strong communication skills, ability to guide decision‑making, negotiate outcomes, and diffuse challenging situations.
Willingness to seek guidance and fill knowledge gaps.
Self‑motivated and capable of managing shifting priorities.
Ability to interpret complex written and visual information, such as procedures, manuals, drawings, and schematics.
Familiarity with standards, codes, regulations, electrical systems, construction methods, equipment, and safety requirements.
Proficiency in software applications including Microsoft Office, SAP, CREWS, OMS, and DDS.
Willingness to participate in emergency and storm‑related activities, potentially requiring extra hours or modified schedules.
Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for commuting to various locations.
