Authorization Specialist Ortho/Spine Office St. Joseph’s Health is seeking an Authorization Specialist for our Orthopaedic and Spine Office. The role focuses on reviewing and processing authorizations, monitoring referral expirations, and verifying insurance updates prior to procedures.

Responsibilities

Review, analyze, and interpret complex medical information to classify, code, and abstract health data.

Collaborate with medical staff and other clinical services to support authorization, denial, and referral processes.

Monitor expiration of referrals, verify insurance updates, and assist in authorization and denial procedures.

Maintain accurate coding using ICD‑9‑CM, CPT and E&M conventions.

Participate in orientation, continuing education, and maintain certification/credentialing.

Qualifications

Certified Coding Specialist, Accredited Record Technician, Registered Record Administrator, or Licensed Practical Nurse with a minimum of five years’ experience in a relevant health care setting.

Background in referrals, denials, and authorization processes preferred.

Proficiency in ICD‑9‑CM, CPT, and E&M coding conventions.

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with strong interpersonal abilities.

Ability to work with confidential material responsibly.

Proficient in office equipment and PC/CRT skills.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Office setting; exposure Class II – no exposure to blood or body fluids.

Light work: sitting, standing, walking, lifting, pushing, and carrying; potential repetitive motions for data entry.

Compensation Pay Range: $19.50–$27.85 per hour (based on experience and location).
