Job Description The

Assistant Director of Communications

assists the UF College of Medicine Director of Communications in the overall management and administrative direction of the COM/Advancement team within the UF Health Communications division by directing strategy, development and publication of communications initiatives in order to accomplish short‑term and long‑range objectives across the missions of research, teaching and patient care of the UF College of Medicine and UF Health.

The Assistant Director is responsible for project management and oversight of communications operations, in particular coordinating and strengthening the efforts and objectives of the college’s editorial, strategic and digital communications. The ideal candidate must be a strong and versatile writer and editor with excellent organizational and planning skills and a thorough understanding of digital and strategic communications concepts and best practices.

Communications and Campaigns

Collaborate with the Director of Communications and work collaboratively with UF Health Communications teams to develop, implement and evaluate strategies and campaigns that advance the objectives of the College of Medicine and UF Health.

Serve as a leader within the COM communications team to raise awareness around the initiatives, achievements and aspirations of the College of Medicine through storytelling and strategic communications approaches, both traditional and modern.

Oversee the editorial efforts and news calendar for stories — including digital channels such as the biweekly newsletter and Dr. Gator site, and print mediums such as the Florida Physician magazine — and lead a range of projects from articles to thought leadership pieces.

Digital Strategy

Develop approaches for a more coordinated and results‑driven web presence for the UF College of Medicine that integrates into overall communications strategy.

Execute and gain adoption of a digital strategy and work with Web Services to ensure UF and UF Health brand identity and messages are presented consistently across COM digital platforms.

Provide guidance to and share best practices with college web administrators, establishing metrics and measures to evaluate success and using analytics to adjust strategies as appropriate.

Advancement Communications

Serve as a lead liaison to the UF Health advancement and alumni affairs teams, guiding the conception, development, execution and evaluation of communications materials and campaigns to advance fundraising and alumni outreach objectives.

Manage production of advancement print and multimedia assets, directing creative and editorial staff, following projects through the division’s project management system, and collecting required reviews and approvals.

Assess systems in place and provide feedback and recommendations for improved processes.

Media Relations

Liaise with the media response team for UF Health as needed.

Ensure the promotional needs of the College of Medicine are effectively met and identify opportunities for improvement.

Collaborate effectively with other medical center and university units involved with government relations, public and community relations, alumni affairs, development and marketing.

Expected Salary $70,000 - $80,000 annually; commensurate with education and experience.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience, or a bachelor’s degree in appropriate areas of specialization and four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization, preferably in journalism, public relations or marketing; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and six years of appropriate experience.

Experience in developing and implementing public relations campaigns, editorial planning, writing, editing and coordination, ideally with a university, academic medicine center or hospital.

Experience working with CMS platforms and social media tools.

Planning and web project management skills.

Solid analytical and problem‑solving skills and ability to work effectively with colleagues, faculty and staff and other health system and university leaders.
