Project Manager I - Design Build Maintenance of Traffic
The time is right to join HNTB’s growing Design Build (DB) Organization! We are seeking a Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Project Manager I with demonstrated experience delivering MOT plans and construction phasing strategies on fast‑paced, large, complex design‑build infrastructure projects. This role is a key member of project leadership teams, responsible for managing budget, schedule, technical requirements, and contractual obligations to achieve HNTB’s 4‑for‑4 performance: quality work, on time, on budget, and client satisfaction.
What You’re Doing
Develop project scope and fee quotation; assist in technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
Act as primary client liaison; manage the project team to deliver scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and client satisfaction. Assist with client project scoping and contract negotiations.
Perform technical discipline tasks including analysis, reports, design, specification, and production for assigned projects.
Implement the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA); lead the development and execution of the project management plan; supervise and mentor team toward overall objectives.
Coordinate with managers on project staffing, including recruitment, development, retention, succession, and performance reviews.
Partner with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to build client relationships and pursuit efforts for strategic and mini‑mega projects. Lead proposal development and interview presentations to the client and within the industry and community.
Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience.
2 years of task management or Deputy PM experience.
What You’ll Bring
Manage and lead MOT design teams in delivering complex design‑build infrastructure projects with construction values of $100M to $2.5B.
Coordinate with design‑build contractor, discipline task leads, and others to develop innovative, cost‑effective, and alternative construction phasing strategies aligned with client budget and traffic mobility goals.
Work closely with project managers, other discipline leads, and contracting partners to provide engineering for cost estimates, alternate MOT strategies, and risk identification for projects and job pursuits.
Project management activities such as staff management, proposal development, budget, scope, fees, workplans, and quality control for assigned projects.
Serve as subject matter expert and provide senior review of designs, proposals, fee estimates, scopes of work nationwide.
Supervise, coach, and mentor junior engineering staff.
Involve strategically throughout a project’s design “life‑cycle” including pre‑award (bid phase), post‑award, or post‑design (construction) phase.
Require travel to project offices.
What We Prefer
Project management experience delivering Design‑Build projects.
Master’s degree in Engineering.
10+ years of relevant experience.
Professional Engineer (PE) certification and ability to obtain PE in multiple states.
Excellent communication skills.
Experience working in a multi‑disciplinary, collaborative engineering environment.
Familiarity with construction methods and ability to optimize designs accordingly.
