NELSON is seeking a

Technical Designer III

to join the

Civic & Justice Practice . The Technical Designer III is responsible for developing, organizing, and executing construction documents to meet project requirements and objectives. Candidates should have strong Revit skills, presentation skills, and experience with conceptual design. Experience in Civic & Justice building typologies is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate has experience working on projects such as correction facilities, prisons, detention centers, courthouses, etc., as well as municipalities, police and fire stations, city and county buildings, and other public works/safety buildings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Support the Project Manager in establishing project goals and objectives including workplan, schedule, budget parameters.

Lead, facilitate and manage the overall design process for moderately complex projects independently and support larger complex projects under supervision.

Contribute to developing fee proposals.

Develop innovative design concepts which are practical, aesthetic, safe and conducive to intended purposes and function within client goals and project budget.

Selection and specification of materials, products, and architectural systems.

Participate in maintaining positive client relationships throughout project.

Assist Project Manager in sub‑contracting or coordinating sub‑consultant work.

Serve as team lead in keeping the project, or a phase, on schedule in conjunction with Project Manager.

Coordinate communication of other disciplines, vendors, and contractors to ensure full project integration.

Lead the Construction Administration phase responding to RFIs, COs, reviewing shop drawings and conducting site reviews.

Ensure project documentation is compliant with NELSON standards for all projects and processes.

Assist with negotiating fees and sub‑contracts.

Develop solutions to technical and design problems following established standards.

Prepare 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings.

Research and compile data during project phases.

Prepare and modify interior architectural documents, elevations, sections, details, etc.

Support the team in collecting client assessment information; may attend interviews, provide documentation support.

Conduct design charrettes and lead project team meetings.

Complete timesheet and expense reports accurately and on time.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines while providing high‑quality service to clients.

Advanced knowledge of design, trends, construction methodology, materials, and manufacturer‑supplier appropriateness.

Advanced knowledge of furniture, fixture, and equipment (FF&E), architectural/interior finishes, lighting, art signage, color, and materials.

Advanced knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines.

Advanced knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles for precision technical plans.

Highly proficient in Revit and AutoCAD.

Basic proficiency in Deltek Vision / Vantagepoint.

Proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign graphic software preferred.

Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Architectural Drafting, or related field.

Highly proficient in Revit and AutoCAD.

8+ years’ experience working in the field of Architecture.

Must be deadline‑oriented.

Strong attention to detail.

Architectural experience in Justice and Civic building typologies strongly preferred (correction facilities, prisons, detention centers, courthouses, municipalities, police and fire stations, city and county buildings, public works/safety buildings).

Familiarity with Photoshop and/or InDesign preferred.
