Job Description
The music therapist will:
Create individualized treatment plans and goals for patients based on their specific needs.
Plan, organize, implement, adapt, and evaluate music therapy interventions designed to positively influence patients' psychosocial needs.
Document patient progress and outcomes in the patient’s EMR.
Create and implement interdisciplinary co-treatments with other pediatric palliative care providers to support psychosocial needs of patients and families.
Integrate the most appropriate music therapy approach (i.e. behavioral, developmental, improvisational, neurological, medical) into the patient’s music therapy treatment planning.
Have a high level of clinical musicianship by playing, adapting, and selecting appropriate musical and non-musical equipment for all music therapy experiences.
Supervise music therapy students and maintain current clinical music therapy practice through review of current music therapy research.
Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings.
Provide legacy interventions and bereavement support for patients and families regarding anticipatory grief and at the time of death as appropriate.
Communicate clinically relevant music therapy information effectively to a variety of professional disciplines in the form of oral, written, in-services, conferences and other community sharing opportunities.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy. Master’s Degree preferred.
Experience: 2 years of music therapy experience working with children required. Experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
Required: Music Therapist – Board Certified (MT-BC)
Knowledge of:
Music therapy interventions and theory
Basic knowledge and understanding of the medical conditions and healthcare experiences of specific patient populations
Clinical operations policies and procedures; documentation and patient record policies and standards
In-depth knowledge of child development theory and practice
Therapeutic play activities and materials; teaching techniques; identification of learning needs and provision of patient/family education
Legal and ethical issues related to patient rights
Crisis intervention techniques
Skilled at:
Musical proficiency and plays a variety of instruments
Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
Basic proficiency in utilization of personal computers in networked Windows-based health care environment to access related software applications; locate, open, edit and print files and information utilized by the unit; and use of Internet as research tool
Ability to:
Create effective relationships with individuals of different cultural beliefs and lifestyles
Observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions and progress
Maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies and other stresses
Maintain confidentiality of information
Make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments
Evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and make individual modifications
Lead and train staff and/or students in music therapy and practice
Work independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
