Overview
The position of Sr. Hydrographic Surveyor exists to carry out required field tasks for survey projects, as requested by the manager or Party Chief. The Hydrographic Survey Technician will perform assigned tasks to the best of their ability with a wide degree of creativity and latitude. This position is responsible for ensuring that the Party Chief or manager's needs are met regarding field activities, and that all tasks are performed efficiently, responsibly and in accordance with safe work procedures. The most important function of this position is attitude, including the ability to work with co-workers, respond politely to community members, work as a team, perform well under pressure, respond positively to supervision, and maintain inter-office confidentiality. A willingness to learn and actively participate in this process. Offshore position located in the Gulf of Mexico and other remote global locations. Ability to travel domestically and overseas as assigned.
Duties And Responsibilities
Measure, map and collect data on the topography of underwater environments with cutting-edge specialized equipment and techniques to produce detailed charts and maps describing riverbeds, shores and the seafloor.
Actively collect data and QC data used in hydrographic models.
Use techniques such as multibeam sonar, sidescan sonars, sub bottom profilers, and conventional towing methods.
Proficient with field concepts, practices, procedures and equipment operations including GPS, Navigation Software, USBL, MBES, Side Scan Sonar, Subbottom data, AUV surveying principles and geotechnical acquisition principles.
Attend and participate in shift handover and HSE meetings.
Assist with and maintain reports.
Understand AUV technical operations.
Operate and maintain USV/DriX platforms for hydrographic, oceanographic, and environmental data collection.
Conduct pre- and post-mission planning, including route optimization, payload configuration, and data validation.
Monitor real-time telemetry and vehicle health during missions, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
Perform routine and corrective maintenance on USV systems, including propulsion, navigation, and communication components.
Collaborate with survey teams to integrate USV data into broader geospatial workflows.
Troubleshoot software and hardware issues related to autonomous navigation and sensor payloads.
Ensure compliance with maritime regulations and safety protocols during deployment and recovery operations.
Performs additional responsibilities and tasks as required to support organizational objectives.
Qualifications REQUIRED
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
Three to five years' experience in the Survey or Geoscience industry as a Survey Professional.
Possession of or ability to obtain TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential).
Ability to obtain a valid Passport and any other regionally mandated offshore work requirement documents as appropriate.
Proficiency with mechanical and electrical equipment.
Experience with autonomous marine systems, preferably USV/DriX or similar platforms.
Familiarity with hydrographic survey equipment (e.g., multibeam echosounders, ADCPs, side-scan sonar).
Proficiency in mission planning software and remote monitoring tools (e.g., iXblue's DriX interface, QINSy, Hypack).
Strong understanding of GNSS systems, inertial navigation, and data telemetry.
Ability to interpret technical schematics and perform mechanical/electrical diagnostics.
Willingness to travel and work in field environments, including offshore or remote locations.
Relevant certifications (e.g., STCW, First Aid, USCG credentials) are a plus.
DESIRED
Two-year Technical Degree or higher in field of study preferred.
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent desired.
