Salary:
Level 2: $50k - $60k; Level 3: $65k - $70k; Grade 22; Open until filled
Job Summary Immediate opening for an Environmental Science Specialist in the Surface Water Protection Unit, Water Quality Division. Review permit applications and develop permits for the Arizona Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (AZPDES) program. Conduct research, draft pollutant limits, and recommend actions based on permit application reviews and facility details.
Remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona.
Job Duties
Review and evaluate moderately complex water reclamation permit applications, reports, facility designs, plans, and cost estimates.
Perform complex environmental calculations based on provided methodologies.
Provide technical guidance to municipal facilities and responsible parties.
Assist in preparing environmental guidance documents.
Lead projects under direction of a unit lead or manager.
Respond to customer inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
Review technical documents for permits and adherence to Surface Water rules and regulations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Federal Clean Water Act and Arizona Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (AZPDES) regulations knowledge.
Wastewater treatment plant operation, mining operations, industrial operations, environmental engineering, compliance and enforcement strategies.
Understanding and application of environmental rules and statutes.
Follow guidance documents and standard operating procedures.
Prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports and oral communication.
Strong organizational skills and ability to schedule multiple projects.
Strong communication skills.
Work independently and in a team-based collaborative environment.
Selective Preference
Bachelor of Science degree in environmental, chemical, hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, biology, earth science or equivalent science discipline.
Level 2 (Grade 21): 2-5 years environmental experience (Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years’ experience).
Level 3 (Grade 22): 5 or more years of environmental experience (Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years’ experience).
Professional in Training Certification or equivalent required through the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice (IPEP) or equivalent.
Pre-Employment Requirements Required: Driver’s License if job requires driving; Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify) completion.
