Overview We are excited to be growing our San Antonio, Texas office and are seeking a senior-level professional to assume a leadership role as a Director of Operations and a Director of a technical practice area in either urban design/planning, landscape architecture, and/or community. MIG supports a hybrid work-from-home/remote and in‑office schedule but encourages in‑person work for learning and team‑building opportunities. Leaders at MIG must work in‑person at least three times per week for office operations, supervision, mentoring, and attending meetings.

Responsibilities

Collaborative Teammate:

Work as part of a multidisciplinary community of designers and other Principals and Directors who lead complex teams in the design and planning of a range of project types. Collaborate with public and private‑sector clients, architects, and engineers in the South Texas region, as well as with other MIG offices and on projects across the country.

Managing Projects:

Provide visionary leadership, strategy, and overarching project and design direction to MIG staff; oversee work products; ensure high‑quality, on‑time/on‑budget delivery; manage hours, billings, subconsultant and client teams; develop scopes of work, budgets, and schedules. Maintain client relationships, represent clients at public hearings, set standards for excellence, responsiveness, and accountability.

Project Work:

Actively work on projects by designing, producing deliverables, and leading teams, creating bold, innovative, and equitable design solutions. Work closely with designers and planners to produce deliverables in fields such as landscape design, planning, and community outreach; facilitate project and public meetings; support junior and mid‑level staff.

Project Types:

Typical projects include streetscape design; park planning and design; site and landscape design for public and private buildings; healthcare facilities; city or town comprehensive plans, campus master plans, community outreach, public utilities; children’s play environments; and community engagement (including online meetings and tools).

Financial Oversight:

In partnership with MIG of San Antonio and California principal leadership, be responsible for the overall financial results and performance of the San Antonio office; provide executive leadership and represent the group to the Management Team with focus on profitability, utilization, staff development, and sales.

Office Operational Functions:

Assist MIG and lead daily operations, including communications, professionalism, facilities oversight, workload leveling, compliance with systems and processes. Oversee accounting functions with the Project Accountant; review office financials; ensure accurate and timely invoices; provide financial health reporting and budget status reviews.

Client Development:

Work with the San Antonio Leadership Team to build and maintain strong client relationships, develop leads, prepare proposals, and identify market gaps and new opportunities.

Leadership Role:

Serve as a leader for the firm and group; mentor, supervise, train staff; conduct business development; uphold MIG’s vision, purpose, and reputation in the professional and regulatory community.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, architecture, planning, community development or a related field (a Master’s degree is a plus).

Local or willing to relocate to the San Antonio area.

Experience leading design teams, supervising staff, and facilitating a collaborative, supportive studio environment.

Strong construction document and construction administration experience.

Demonstrated experience managing projects, maintaining compliance with contracts, drafting scopes and budgets, and managing schedules.

Ability to prepare and deliver effective public presentations, lead working meetings, and speak fluently to clients and stakeholders.

Ability to participate in marketing and business development opportunities, develop proposals, and maintain external relationships.

Excellent communicator; clear, collaborative, and productive written and verbal communication.

Skill in building respectful relationships with community members, organizations, and partners.

Excellent skills in reviewing work products and providing direction to staff.

Approachable, calm demeanor; adaptable teammate willing to help others.

Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Cloud; proficiency with Deltek accounting platform is a plus.

Ten (10) or more years of professional experience in a similar role in planning, community development, public policy, or a related field.

Licensed in any state; Texas is ideal for certain field areas.

Salary $120,000–$155,000 per year, commensurate with skills, experience, licensure/certification, and the individual’s ability to bring projects in the door.
