Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:
To perform a wide variety of clerical work involved in operating a school library; and to assist students and teachers in utilizing library resources. Bilingual positions in this classification require fluency in a second language.

SUPERVISION:
Positions in this classification are supervised by a principal.
Positions in this classification exercise no supervision.
Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assists students and teachers in locating and selecting library materials.
  • Provides a variety of services to children such as reading aloud, giving book talks, and assisting other staff in book fairs and related activities.
  • Maintains book inventory including shelving books and making minor repairs to books and other library materials.
  • Types and files cards in catalog drawers according to established system.
  • Processes new books into the library including pasting in pockets, typing cards and shelving.
  • Checks in and out library books and materials including stamping books and inventorying books and materials.
  • May issue and receive audiovisual materials for the library.
  • May maintain computerized library records.
  • May assist principal in selection of new library books.
  • Performs job related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/TRAINING
One year of full time paid experience or the equivalent in part time paid experience working in a public or school library.
-OR-
Completion of 24 units of college level work
-OR-
Completion of a course or program that issues a certificate from an accredited institution or organization such as a college, or the Library Support Staff Certification program.
-AND-
High school graduation or the equivalent.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION: This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 28A. Most positions in this class work 2-6hours/9-12months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION:
  • Written Examination. WEIGHT: 100%
  • Bilingual Certification. WEIGHT: Pass/Fail. This certification is required for bilingual positions in the class.
  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.
  • Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.
  • Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.
  • This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.
