CNN’s Climate & Weather team is seeking a reporter with strong writing skills to track down stories that resonate with digital audiences in a fast‑paced breaking news environment.
The ideal candidate is self‑motivated, prioritizes trustworthiness and objective reporting even under tight deadlines, and can distinguish fact from fiction. They are fascinated by the natural world, thrive in a dynamic news environment, and have their finger on the pulse of emerging trends.
This role involves reporting on weather‑related impacts, gathering and clearing photo and video, and writing concise text usable across all CNN platforms. The reporter will serve as the backbone for daily reporting for the climate and weather team and must juggle multiple tasks while working closely with meteorologists and climate experts to support forecasts and extreme weather events, including hurricanes, blizzards, tornado outbreaks, and geomagnetic storms.
Applicants must embody a team‑oriented, collaborative ethos, valuing diversity and working well with fellow newsroom reporters, data visualization journalists, and special projects teams.
Responsibilities
- Chase reportable facts to help CNN beat competitors on breaking weather news and distinctive reporting.
- Conduct interviews for facts, video, sound, and storylines.
- Verify and secure rights for photos and video.
- Work with weather and climate experts to pitch, research, report, script, and write for digital platforms.
- Monitor video and photo sources for news assets, viral moments, and opportunities to explain weather science.
- Maintain relationships with media vendors to keep CNN in good standing and secure priority elements.
- Develop and maintain element‑clearance and newsgathering workflows for consistent team communication.
Qualifications & Experience
- 3+ years newsroom reporting and writing, ideally digital.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, media or communications, or equivalent experience.
- Rights and clearances experience; basic media rights knowledge.
- Familiarity with weather and climate newsgathering, including sourcing pitfalls.
- Proven ability to write for broad digital audiences on tight deadlines.
- Reporting and fact‑checking experience; knack for identifying strong characters.
- Strong news judgment; passion for journalism and extreme weather.
- Exceptional communication and organization.
- Strong interpersonal skills; collaborative, team‑oriented.
- Willingness to work holidays, weekends, overnights, and extended hours as news demands.
