McClatchy Media is looking for a high-energy, self-starting and community-minded reporter to cover Platte and Clay counties in Kansas City’s Northland.

This reporter will cover local government and influential institutions with a strong focus on accountability, reaching residents north of the river. The role involves finding topics of interest to Northland readers, digging into stories, producing quick stories and pursuing more enterprising angles. Services such as callouts, engagement tools, explainers and fact checks will be used.

The reporter will work closely with politics and government reporters to monitor coverage across Kansas City, Jefferson City, and Washington.

This beat emphasizes community engagement and building trust. Participation in the Star’s broader outreach efforts is required.
