Broadcast Operator

Current Position is for the morning shift starting at 05:00 AM. This position is responsible for providing the on‑air operations for NMPBS, which involves monitoring broadcast program logs and various audio and video equipment to ensure that programs are being properly broadcast. The role monitors all video streams for audio, video, closed‑captioning, and correct aspect ratio, manipulates multiple automation playlists, and ensures NMPBS operates within FCC rules and local broadcast requirements.

Rigorously consistent and reliable attendance is a requirement of this position. It is shift work and requires flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The role works independently in most tasks, receiving only general supervision.

Essential Functions

  • Configure and manipulate the air‑client playlist, including secondary event insertion of logos.
  • Monitor and log the status of all content streams and take responsibility for quality control.
  • Set up and monitor distribution of television program material, live linear distribution into cloud‑based platforms.
  • Utilize third‑party software to set up and monitor distribution of file‑based content into cloud platforms.
  • Operate, monitor, and log mountain‑top transmitters to ensure broadcasting capabilities as required by the FCC.
  • Set up tape machines for on‑air playback.
  • Operate and log Emergency Alert System (EAS) equipment.
  • Operate master control equipment, including video router interface and broadcast automation.
  • Transcode files to the server for playback.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other departments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in film, TV and/or video distribution platforms.
  • Experience with file‑based workflow processes.
  • Familiarity with broadcast automation environments and/or livestreaming environments.
  • Experience in operations and/or traffic at a broadcast radio or TV facility.
  • Experience with manipulation of file‑based video content, including transcoding software.
  • Experience in computer programming, networking and/or web design.
