Communications and Media, Assistant Director (ATLDOT) City of Atlanta

Salary Range:

$80,594.95–$107,594.26

As part of the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT), the Assistant Director will oversee the creation and maintenance of visual assets and written communications that inform and advise internal and external stakeholders. The role supports project communication for construction, infrastructure, micro‑mobility, and sustainability initiatives and provides content for leadership, city administration, and the Atlanta City Council.

Supervision & Leadership • Works under general supervision; reports directly to the Chief Communications Officer.

• Uses independent judgment in routine and non‑routine situations.

• Supervises and evaluates assigned staff; handles employee concerns, directs work assignments, provides counseling and discipline, and completes performance appraisals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Research, write, edit, and proofread all published content—including speeches, remarks, press releases, key messages, video scripts, and promotional materials—for ATLDOT.

Translate ideas and objectives into targeted messaging, ensuring accuracy through fact‑checking.

Incorporate municipal and ATLDOT priorities into communications tailored to events and audiences.

Compose editorials, press releases, statements, announcements, and social media content representing ATLDOT leadership.

Maintain deep knowledge of ATLDOT projects to inform all materials.

Lead development, writing, and editing of all editorial content and communications.

Create strategic messages, remarks, talking points, and speeches for the Commissioner and surrogates.

Develop website content and other editorial materials in collaboration with subject‑matter experts.

Produce emergency notification content for NotifyATL, robocalls, and rapid response messages.

Provide first‑draft edits, including grammar, spelling, and content corrections.

Identify opportunities to enhance ATLDOT collateral and marketing materials (brochures, fact sheets, newsletters, videos, social media).

Resolve content inconsistencies, following up with contacts for clarification.

Track regional and national trends that may affect material direction.

Work off‑hours and weekends as needed for news cycles and event calendars.

Participate in Office Open Records coordination and community engagement activities.

Serve as liaison to business, professional, religious, community, and civic groups for positive public relations.

Review complaints, identify trends, and develop corrective plans.

Respond to inquiries (telephone, in‑person, mail) from citizens, city employees, and department heads.

Initiate engagement with community groups for special projects and events.

Speak to community, civic, religious, business, and professional groups on ATLDOT initiatives.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Superior communication and writing skills, including AP style.

Ability to translate ideas into audience‑appropriate messaging.

Strong project management and organizational skills; handle multiple projects under tight deadlines.

Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and other relevant software.

Excellent grammar and editorial judgment.

Team‑orientated, capable of working with people at all levels.

Strong time‑management and detail orientation.

Adaptable to shifting priorities without loss of efficiency.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or English.

6–8 years of experience in writing/editing and content management in government, nonprofit, or corporate communications.

Knowledge of the City of Atlanta, local neighborhoods, and key stakeholders.

Preferred:

MBA or equivalent post‑graduate education.

Work Schedule The hybrid work schedule policy requires in‑person work at city facilities at least four (4) days per week, with the option to work remotely one (1) day per week subject to eligibility and supervisor approval. The schedule may change to five (5) days in‑person as needed.

Work Environment & Physical Demands Typical office conditions with occasional field or site visits required. Lifting requirements are not a primary component of the role.
