The Banner is hiring a copy editor to serve as the last line of defense against errors, lack of clarity, and style lapses, ensuring coverage meets The Banner’s standards. The role requires working on tight deadlines, collaborating with reporters and editors across diverse topics, and a strong knowledge of Baltimore and Maryland.
Responsibilities
Edit stories to ensure accuracy, precision, and compliance with The Banner’s standards.
Apply The Banner’s style guide and AP Style to all content.
Assist in maintaining and updating the style guide.
Stay up‑to‑date on AP and other style updates and best practices for reporting on local communities.
Craft headlines that are sharp and tailored for online audiences.
Represent The Banner in community events and media appearances.
Use newsroom analytics to identify coverage that serves readers.
Qualifications
Minimum five years of copy editing experience.
Comfortable in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
Fluency with AP Style and journalism best practices.
Teamwork mindset and willingness to collaborate.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
Willingness to work evenings and occasional weekends as news dictates.
Commitment to journalistic ethics and values.
Salary Range
$75,000 – $80,000. The actual salary may vary based on experience, internal equity, and business considerations.
Additional Information
Schedule: Hybrid evening work schedule starting at 2:00 p.m.; flexibility may be required based on news demands.
Location: Baltimore, MD (remote work flexibility available).
