UTMB was established in 1891 as the first academic health center in Texas and is a component of the University of Texas System. Today UTMB includes five schools (medicine, nursing, health professions, public and population health, and graduate biomedical sciences), a network of hospitals and clinics that provide a full range of primary and specialized medical care, and numerous research facilities.

The Director of Library Services provides strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and a forward‑looking vision for the planning, development, and delivery of comprehensive library services. This role is integral to ensuring that library resources, programs, and technologies effectively support the institution’s mission of excellence in education, research, and community engagement.

The Director also manages all aspects of the University Library, including personnel, fiscal resources, space, assets, procedures, policies, outreach programs, and both short and long‑term development and planning activities. They will be responsible for overseeing daily operations, supervising staff, administering budgets, and advancing digital and print resource services. The Director champions innovation and fosters a user‑centered environment that promotes learning, collaboration, and equitable access to information. In close collaboration with faculty, staff, and institutional stakeholders, the Director ensures library services are aligned with university goals and responsive to the evolving needs of the academic and broader community.

Minimal Education and Experience

• Master of Library Science (ALA‑accredited) plus seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in an academic or research library, including supervisory responsibilities.
• Significant experience in academic or research library leadership.
• Eight years of related experience, including demonstrated management and leadership in an academic health sciences or medical library, is strongly preferred but not required.

Income Package

Salary will range from $123,000 - $160,000 and is based on education, training and experience. Additional benefits are provided to include a superior family benefits program, an unsurpassed retirement program, and other potential incentives.
