Web Developer

(Cheshire-based, not remote) Rebellion Group is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Web Developer to play a critical role in the development, and maintenance of our high‑traffic, scalable websites. A qualified Web Developer applicant at Rebellion Group has experience building dynamic, data‑driven digital projects across a variety of platforms. The most qualified applicants have a demonstrated passion for, and history of, thinking outside the box while also understanding the value of process and organization. They enjoy staying on top of emerging technology by being a part of developer communities, reading relevant publications and trying things out just because they’re curious. They must demonstrate a proven ability to work independently, take ownership, and manage project timelines effectively, you should be comfortable with the unknown.

Agency experience is a plus; this is a semi‑hybrid work schedule, requiring at least 4 days per week in the Cheshire office, one of those days being Wednesday.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain highly performant, scalable, and secure websites in WordPress and various other CMS solutions.
  • Write clean, efficient, well‑documented, and testable code for both front‑end and back‑end components.
  • Write clean, efficient, well‑documented Pull Requests that are easily understood.
  • Ensure application stability, speed, and security through continuous testing and optimization.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex production issues and performance bottlenecks in our systems.
  • Collaborate in the planning and execution of large, complex features and projects.
  • Adhere to Rebellion Group coding standards, development best practices, and secure coding principles across all projects.
  • Collaborate on the research, evaluation and adoption of new technologies, frameworks, and tools to improve the development process and product performance.
  • Support the Rebel marketing team on internal web development projects including the development of custom marketing tools.
  • Support the creation of detailed technical and user documentation.
  • Work with other Rebels and clients to identify business requirements and draft project definitions, technical specifications and the appropriate architecture.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and UX/UI Designers to translate user stories and wireframes into technical specifications and functional, intuitive user interfaces.
  • Assist in the technical QA of project launches.
  • Perform to high quality standards while understanding the importance of meeting client delivery deadlines and budgets.

Qualifications & Skills

  • At least 3 years of work‑related experience in responsive website and application development.
  • Proficiency in web services and use of open source frameworks.
  • Proficiency with PHP.
  • Foundational understanding of HTML5, Javascript, modern CSS in frameworks like Bootstrap, Tailwind, etc.
  • Familiarity with CSS and Javascript frameworks like Bootstrap, Tailwind, etc.
  • An understanding of React, Vue, Angular, and other Javascript frameworks a plus.
  • Understanding of FTP and sending files to remote resources.
  • Knowledge of setting up/importing/exporting databases for CMS setups and transfers.
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong willingness to collaborate with, knowledge share and mentor others.
  • Version Control: Experience with Git and platforms like GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket.
  • Hosting Infrastructure support - WPEngine, DigitalOcean, Netlify - familiar with many hosting methodologies, shared, virtual, baremetal, etc, & website host migrations.
  • CMS - WordPress, Concrete CMS, Shopify and familiarity with various other CMS solutions such as Decap, Craft, BigCommerce.
  • Experience with static site generators such as Eleventy or Jekyll.
  • Developing accessible (WCAG 2.0 - 2.2 standards, A & AA level compliance) websites.

Preferred Soft Skills

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with a proven track record of resolving critical issues.
  • Work with other Rebels and clients to identify business requirements and draft project definitions, technical specifications and the appropriate architecture.
  • Perform to high quality standards while understanding the importance of meeting client delivery deadlines and budgets.
  • A passion for continuous learning and staying current with emerging web technologies and industry trends including coding with AI.
