Work You Will Do Traffic Designer IV – District Four / Transportation Development / Highway Design / Traffic Design.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee and coordinate the development and preparation of detailed component plans and specifications for signing, pavement markings, signalization, and lighting plans, utilizing CAD.

Prepare technical highway signing and pavement marking, signalization, and lighting component plans using current DOT software, standards, and criteria.

Perform quality assurance/control reviews to ensure plans comply with design criteria, policy, and procedures.

Coordinate major activities for traffic control devices, traffic signal systems, and lighting systems; acquire necessary information, assess economic feasibility, and solve problems.

Obtain local requirements and ordinances from municipalities and other agencies.

Assist in project management, field reviews, data collection, and Local Agency Program (LAP) reviews.

Develop and update project schedules with minimal supervision; provide training to designers on signing, pavement marking, signalization, lighting, and other design tools.

Guide junior designers in engineering assignments, scope development, and estimate creation; review shop drawings.

Serve on technical review committees and advisory groups for consultant acquisition and design projects.

Success Candidate Capabilities Knowledge Of

Concepts, terminologies, design principles and analytical techniques of highway design

Computer-aided drafting and design (CAD) tools and automated office products

Project engineering and scheduling

Interpretation of design standards, specifications and criteria established or adopted by Florida Department of Transportation

Skilled In

The engineering process for production of highway construction plans

The use of manual on uniform traffic control devices

Communicating technical information verbally and in writing

Planning, organizing, and managing multiple work assignments

Ability To

Establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships

Apply engineering quantitative techniques in the area of highway design

Solve engineering related problems

Use a personal computer (PC)

Train and guide designers in the design process

Be an active part of a group

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent and four years of continuous employment experience (post‑secondary education can substitute on a year‑for‑year basis).
