About the job Arts and Culture Reporter

The Post and Courier, South Carolina's oldest daily newspaper and premier news source, is seeking an arts and culture reporter to be part of our features team in the Charleston area.

The emphasis for this role will be on thoroughly covering the arts and culture scene, from the annual Spoleto Festival to upcoming plays to the symphony orchestra, in Charleston, one of the country's fastest-growing areas.

This beat will focus on writing arts and culture feature stories based on issues, upcoming events and local talent.

You'll write about art exhibitions, stage productions, concerts around town and more importantly the artists and stars, as well as key players in the arts and culture scene and organizations that back this work. Part of your job will be to provide helpful information in a guide-like format to our readers, as well as write reviews on exhibitions, plays, concerts and more when warranted after consultation with the editor.

We are seeking an innovative journalist whose stories will delve into the sense-of-place culture found in the Lowcountry as well as the lives of those entrenched in the local arts and culture community, exploring their impact in Charleston and beyond. A background in the arts is a bonus to help better understand the beat.

Along with reporting short takes and enterprise pieces, this journalist will also seek to tell stories in other ways, including in quick-form video reports and through our social media platforms. As readers increasingly consume video for news and information, our reporters aim to expand our digital presence with mobile-first storytelling.

This position reports to the local features editor, and this journalist's work will appear online and in our print Sunday Life and Charleston Scene sections, as well as other sections when warranted.

The position is part of a new Arts and Culture Lab created by The Post and Courier through a nonprofit arm of the newspaper that funds public service reporting. Donations from endowment groups, as well as individuals, support The Public Service and Investigative Fund. Other funded areas of reporting include education and climate impacts on rising waters and coastal resilience.

If you are hired, you will join an ambitious, Pulitzer Prize-winning culture where talented journalists have the opportunity to pursue the best work of their careers, limited only by their ambition and determination.

The Post and Courier is privately held and is investing in its journalism. We began expanding across South Carolina in 2020, seeking to fill a void in news deserts or areas where local news coverage had withered. We now operate Post and Courier newsrooms in multiple cities, including Columbia, Greenville/Spartanburg, Beaufort County/Hilton Head, Florence and Myrtle Beach.

We are a passionate, dedicated, digital-driven news organization, and seek someone who shares that journalistic passion and commitment to excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Cover quick-hit arts and culture news in the Charleston area as well as produce thoughtful, longer-form features in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Use a data-driven approach to providing content that grows our audience.
  • Run with assignments as well as plan and conceptualize long-form and enterprise story ideas that could warrant centerpieces.
  • In some cases, review performances, from art exhibits to theater productions to concerts.
  • Embrace a spirit of nimble experimentation to test nontraditional story formats.
  • At minimum, a bachelor's degree in journalism or another field of study if you have journalism experience. Ideally, candidate will have at least 2 years of reporting experience.
  • Writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent news judgment.
  • A background that demonstrates dedication to impactful journalism as its own art form.
  • A background in the arts in some form is not a requirement but a bonus.
  • Video editing and production skills are preferred.
  • Working knowledge of SEO.
  • Must have reliable personal transportation.

Along with their resume, applicants should attach a cover letter and 5 of their best article clips.
