Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing general art work at the professional level, designing art and copy layouts for material to be presented in television, newspapers, packaging or other means. Creates print and digital materials for the Library, including but not limited to event flyers, invitations, logos, signage, t-shirts, promotional giveaways, brochures, and presentations. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. Exercises no supervision. Work Location: Central Library – 600 Soledad, San Antonio, TX 78205 Work Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. May require occasional evenings and weekends. Responsibilities Studies illustrations and photographs to plan presentation of material, product, or service. Helps to brainstorm and develop ideas for marketing campaigns. Plans, researches, develops, and executes concepts for a variety of print and digital graphic design projects. Determines size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy; selects style and size of type; and arranges layout based upon available space, knowledge of layout principles, and aesthetic design concepts. Draws sample of finished layout and presents to supervisor for approval. Prepares illustrations or rough sketches of material according to client or supervisor's instructions. Determines style, techniques, and medium best suited to produce desired effects and to conform with specific instructions. Discusses illustration at various stages of completion and makes changes as necessary. Prepares series of drawings to illustrate sequence and timing of story developments. Assembles final layouts for printer. Determines project specification (i.e., size, type, paper weight, ink colors, folds, cuts, etc.), including costs and completion dates. Maintains inventory of graphics supplies and equipment. Plans and coordinates design work with photographers, typesetters, lithographers, and printers. Prepares final press files for outside vendors, checks, and approves proofs from printer, and attends press checks when necessary. Produces designs into camera-ready artwork for printer or silk. Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. Qualifications Associate's of Arts Degree from an accredited college or university with preferable coursework in Graphics Design or a related field. Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in working with projects of varied size and complexity in the areas of drafting and graphics. Ability to manage multiple projects with excellent attention to detail in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment. Strong demonstrated proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat). Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Office 365 and PowerPoint). Proficiency with video editing and animation software (Premiere Pro). Proficiency with Mac computer platform preferred. Aptitude for strategic thinking and a strong sense of ownership of your area of responsibility. Strong English proofreading skills. Spanish fluency. Familiarity with ADA signage regulations and accessible design. Knowledge of various graphics equipment (office printers, paper cutter, laminator, oversize printer).
