POSITION TITLE: Manager, Membership Communications & Services
LOCATION: In-Person Alexandria, VA
Summary of Position The Membership Communications & Services Manager serves as a key member of the leadership team and plays a strategic role in advancing the organization’s membership growth and engagement objectives. This position is well suited for a collaborative, forward thinking professional with demonstrated experience in nonprofit membership and communications management.
The Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of membership operations, including recruitment, retention, and the development and delivery of member benefits and services. These efforts are designed to enhance the member experience and support the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) long‑term growth. The role also serves as the primary liaison to several association committees and member sections, including medical student and surgical resident physician cohorts, and leads the planning and execution of the annual Awards Ceremony and Annual Ceremonial Conclave at the ACOS Annual Clinical Assembly meeting.
In addition to membership responsibilities, the Manager directs the organization’s communications and marketing initiatives ensuring alignment with strategic goals and data‑informed decision making. This includes delivering actionable insights to leadership and maintaining consistent, high‑quality messaging across all platforms.

Membership Strategy & Engagement
Advise the organization on best practices in association membership and collaborate with the Membership committee to evaluate and refine membership requirements, benefits, and services.
Plan, implement, and assess membership recruitment and retention initiatives to support sustained growth and engagement.
Process, review, and approve membership applications; prepare committee agendas, minutes, statistics, and reports in coordination with committee chairs.
Mange dues billing processes, including discipline specific dues, and maintain accurate membership records and data.
Administer the application process for the Association’s professional designations and support the Membership Committee in evaluating candidates.
Maintain and update designation requirements and related policies as needed.
Serve as staff liaison to medical student and resident physician sections, supporting their engagement and development.
Maintain and revise membership related policies and procedures manuals.
Coordinate and manage the annual Awards ceremony and the annual Ceremonial Conclave at the ACOS Annual Clinical Assembly.
Data Analysis & Reporting
Develop annual budgets and forecasts for membership programs, including dues projections; monitor variances and recommend corrective actions as needed.
Create and maintain dashboards and reports to monitor membership trends, engagement metrics, and retention rates.
Provide regular data insights and forecasts to senior leadership and the Board of Governors.
Identify strategic opportunities through data visualization and predictive analytics.
Utilize Excel (including pivot tables and macros), AI tools, and other platforms to ensure data accuracy and actionable insights.
Support strategic planning efforts with data driven recommendations.
Demonstrate independence, attention to detail and a passion for transforming data into meaningful outcomes.
Communications & Marketing
Develop and manage a content calendar for newsletters, announcements, and digital communications.
Craft compelling messaging to promote membership, programs, services, and benefits.
Ensure brand consistency across all member‑facing communications.
Collaborate with internal teams to align messaging across platforms, including the website, email, social media, and the ACOS’s monthly electronic newsletter.
Support the production and promotion of the Association’s medical journals.
Market the association’s offerings to current and prospective members.
Mentorship Committee Oversight
Provide oversight and staff support to the Mentorship Committee, ensuring alignment with the ACOS’s mission and strategic goals.
Promote and facilitate bidirectional mentorship between medical students and practicing surgeons, recognizing the mutual value of shared learning and professional development.
Support mentorship initiatives that contribute to career planning, leadership development and long‑term career success for both mentees and mentors.
Ensure mentorship programming is inclusive, accessible, and integrated into broader member engagement strategies.
Collaborate with committee members to evaluate mentorship outcomes and recommend improvements.
Other Duties
Creation, implementation and assessment of focus groups, membership surveys and membership campaigns; compile and report findings to the Chief Executive Officer.
Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.

Qualifications and Competencies Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited institution; a concentration in marketing, communications, or a related field is preferred.
Minimum of 3‑5 years of progressive experience in a membership association environment; experience within healthcare associations a plus.
At least 3 years of experience in a managerial or senior administrative capacity, with demonstrated leadership and supervisory responsibilities.
Prior experience working is a small team, mission driven nonprofit environment is advantageous.
Technical and Analytical Skills
Strong data analysis capabilities, including proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, macros), dashboard creation, and data visualization.
Experience with association management systems (AMS/CRM), online community platforms, and learning management systems (LMS).
Familiarity with marketing automation platforms, content management systems, and project management tools.
Ability to leverage AI tools and other technologies to ensure data accuracy and generate actionable insights.
Experience with platforms such as iMIS, Higher Logic Thrive (Communities, Elevate Informz), and Cadmium for event and education management is preferred.
Leadership & Communication
Proven ability to manage projects, contractors, and vendors effectively.
Self‑motivated and proactive leader with a creative, solution‑oriented mindset.
Highly detail‑oriented with a commitment to excellence and high standards.
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with an engaging and professional presentation style.
