Overview WGHP/FOX 8 is seeking an experienced and reliable Broadcast Engineer to join the Engineering Department. This role is a hands-on technical position responsible for the daily maintenance of station equipment, from studio infrastructure and networking to high-power RF systems. The position holds primary technical oversight of broadcast transmitting facilities to ensure maximum uptime and compliance.
Responsibilities System Maintenance and Repair (Daily Focus): Troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on all electronic and mechanical equipment necessary for the stationor continuous operation.
Prioritization: Independently assess, prioritize, and execute repair or replacement of critical broadcast equipment to minimize downtime.
Inter-Departmental Support: Collaborate with other station departments to provide technical support and ensure proper maintenance and operation of their equipment.
Inventory and Logistics: Manage spare parts inventory and coordinate the ordering of replacement components as needed.
Critical Infrastructure Oversight Transmitter and Tower Facility Oversight: In partnership with the Director of Technology, provide direct oversight, monitoring, and management for broadcast transmitters, guyed towers, and remote facility sites, including maintenance, supervising contracted work, and facility upkeep.
Mandatory Reporting: Document and report all operational, maintenance, and compliance issues at transmitter sites to the Director of Technology.
Compliance: Ensure the station operates with optimum quality and adheres to FCC and FAA rules and regulations, with specific attention to transmitter logs and procedures.
Required Experience and Qualifications Minimum 2–3 years of hands-on experience in maintenance and repair of computer, networking, and commercial television equipment.
Strong knowledge of the Broadcast Air-Chain, including UHF transmitters, Bonded Cellular, ENG, SNG, and RF microwave systems.
Regulatory Knowledge: Working knowledge of FCC rules and regulations.
Tool Proficiency: Experience using specialized and standard electronic test equipment.
Self-Management and Decision-Making: Ability to work independently, make critical decisions, and take prompt action without supervision.
On-Call Availability: On-call status to address emergencies or breakdowns impacting station operation.
Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in maintenance and reporting tasks.
Physical Requirements: Able to lift at least 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and climb ladders as needed.
Preferred Skills Advanced computer skills
AutoCAD experience
Ability to train or instruct personnel in other departments on proper operation of technical equipment
