Responsibilities / Examples Of Functions and Tasks Notes: Responsibilities are described with essential and peripheral emphasis.
Curriculum Development — ESSENTIAL: Review and evaluate curriculum, within divisional/departmental budget constraints and equipment/material availability; coordinate with part-time instructors to ensure consistency of lecture/laboratory content; coordinate with educational administrator to assure transferability of courses within the CSU and UC systems; evaluate and/or revise course descriptions to fit curricular designs; present proposals for curricular changes to the curriculum committee and/or other appropriate shared governance body; implement changes as approved. PERIPHERAL: Review curriculum for concordance with changes in laws, regulations, and standards.
Lecture/ Laboratory Preparation — ESSENTIAL: Review and evaluate new textbooks for content, readability, and cost effectiveness; select textbooks; prepare lectures and syllabi materials; coordinate with publishers; place reference items on reserve in the library; prepare lesson plans; use appropriate equipment and software; tailor delivery to support clear understanding; monitor student participation and maintain classroom and laboratory order. PERIPHERAL: attend conferences to increase knowledge of subject matter and teaching methods.
Student Performance Evaluation — ESSENTIAL: Develop quizzes and examinations; monitor examinations to prevent cheating; evaluate student responses and assign grades; advise students on academic matters; refer students to appropriate services.
Shared Governance Participation — ESSENTIAL: Attend and participate in departmental meetings; respond in writing to information requests; participate in curriculum development and equipment/textbook costing; serve on campus-wide committees; participate in meetings organized by Academic Senate and Staff Development; serve on hiring committees as needed. PERIPHERAL: attend Board of Trustees and/or Strategic Council meetings as necessary.
Ancillary Student Services — ESSENTIAL: Hold regular office hours; provide academic advising and positive role modeling; support graduation and awards ceremonies; provide letters of recommendation; conduct review sessions; advise students regarding department curriculum.
Minimum Qualifications Master's in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication or organizational communication OR Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in drama/theater arts, mass communication or English OR the equivalent. This position is a part-time faculty teaching assignment with the following salary rates: Part-Time/Adjunct Salary Schedule (Download PDF reader). Degree and years of acceptable teaching experience determine step placement.
