Senior Editor (Editorial) National Geographic DC The Senior Editor is responsible for assigning, editing, and publishing ambitious editorial projects across National Geographic’s digital and print platforms. The ideal candidate has a strong talent for finding and shaping memorable stories in a variety of forms, deep relationships with freelance writers, and a solid background in the core topics covered by National Geographic. The role requires enthusiasm for ambitious storytelling and a passion for helping readers gain a better understanding of the planet and our place within it. Journalistic experience in science, history, archeology, innovation, technology, and medical science is strongly desired. Responsibilities: Manage the development, commissioning, and editing of stories and packages, including new franchises and ways of covering National Geographic’s core themes. Oversee related workflows to ensure timely delivery and adherence to word counts, factual accuracy, and other specifications. Develop, nurture, and maintain relationships with writers and industry professionals, emphasizing new voices and diverse perspectives. Report to Senior Manager, Features on project development and challenges; assist in feature management, including contracts, scheduling, production stages, and administrative tasks. Basic Qualifications: Minimum of 6+ years of editing experience with increasing editorial responsibility in a media organization, managing content. Outstanding editorial judgment, strong attention to detail, and excellent organizational skills. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, strong knowledge of the National Geographic brand and mission, and expertise in related core topic areas. Must be on site 4+ days a week; office is in DC (1145 17th St NW). Ability to take overall responsibility for concept and content, and manage creative relationships. Strong understanding of storytelling approaches and ability to manage multiple projects on deadline. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with self‑motivation for effective collaboration. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to create impact and bring fresh ideas within a team while working collaboratively in highly matrixed conditions. Proven track record in growing print and digital audiences and expanding audience demographics. Curiosity about the planet and quick grasp of new subject matter. Understanding of the editorial process from conception to completion and ability to resolve operational problems. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe products, Editorial CMS (K4/InCopy), digital media platforms; knowledge of AirTable is a plus. Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree The hiring range for this position in Washington, D.C. is $95,500 to $128,000 per year. Base pay will vary based on internal equity and candidate qualifications. A bonus and/or long‑term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to full medical, financial, and other benefits.
