Senior Retail and Packaging Designer Job at Square in San Francisco

Senior Retail and Packaging Designer
Join to apply for the Senior Retail and Packaging Designer role at Square.
Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions—to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes—large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
Role
We're looking for a Senior Designer to join Square. The role reports into the Sales, Partnerships, and Hardware team and will focus on improving the seller experience across packaging and retail. Exceptional design is at the core of Square. As a senior designer, you'll be critical in connecting sellers to Square hardware and its ecosystem at both pre‑ and post‑purchase moments. You'll lead packaging, in‑store retail experiences, and third‑party retail across markets.
Responsibilities
- Own the packaging and retail workflow from concept to creation, collaborating with copywriters, product marketing managers, production, and retail program managers to deliver work that connects sellers to Square.
- Develop a point of view and strategy around Square's retail presence and packaging, pushing new innovations and evolving our footprint in physical stores and when our product hits a seller's doorstep.
- Become a product expert for both Square hardware and software, understanding how they work and the benefits they bring to sellers.
- Learn the seller journey and its nuances, applying them to packaging and retail work.
- Understand market nuances and demands, pushing for the best design solutions.
- Approach routine print updates holistically, identifying ways to elevate our work and save sellers time.
- Find intuitive, elegant, brand‑right solutions that resonate with existing and new audiences.
- Integrate new technologies, solutions, and practices into legacy spaces, shaping interactive and video experiences for in‑store.
- Own the development and creation process, managing time across packaging and retail, and prioritizing accordingly.
- Leverage AI to design, automate, scale, and innovate whenever possible.
- Seek feedback, build consensus among the team, and bring stakeholders along with recommendations.
- Know the Square brand, knowing when to push or pare back.
- Set a high bar for design, mentoring and sounding board for other designers and writers.
- Help craft strategy across the organization and ideate on work beyond packaging and retail.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders and make critical decisions with little to no oversight.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience as a designer focused on packaging and retail displays.
- Advanced design and storytelling skills across print, interactive, and video.
- Working knowledge of production and asset creation in print, digital, and video workflows.
- Experience collaborating with designers, program managers, product managers, product marketers, and third‑party vendors.
- Ability to apply consumer insights and metrics to inform design decisions and influence company‑wide strategy.
- Design to art‑direct and a passion for learning new things.
- Familiarity with AI tools to influence strategy, scale processes, and assist with execution.
- Curiosity, risk‑taking, and a desire to learn and improve.
- Portfolio of relevant work required for consideration.
