DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Cal Poly Maritime Academy Library invites applications for a pool of part‑time librarians as needed. Responsibilities may include any combination of the following:

  • Supporting library instruction and teaching library workshops
  • Providing reference services through varied modalities – in person, email, chat, and Zoom
  • Representing the library at campus‑wide outreach events
  • Creating and updating online resources, including webpages, guides, and tutorials

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Librarian
  • Appointments from the part‑time pool are temporary, so applicants must be available on very short notice

ABOUT CAL POLY MARITIME ACADEMY: Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), Cal Poly Maritime Academy is a unique and specialized campus of the 23‑campus system. Serving a population of approximately 1000 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, it is one of only seven degree‑granting maritime academies in the United States — and the only one on the West Coast. The academy offers seven baccalaureate degrees and a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, Coast Guard, and Naval Reserve officers. Cal Poly Maritime Academy focuses on intellectual learning, applied technology, leadership development, and global awareness. Students participate in training cruises aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear or other international educational experiences, gaining a unique perspective on our increasingly global culture and economy.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This non‑tenure‑track position in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement includes the following duties:

  • Supporting library instruction and teaching library workshops
  • Providing reference services through varied modalities – in person, email, chat, and Zoom
  • Representing the library at campus‑wide outreach events
  • Creating and updating online resources, including webpages, guides, and tutorials

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA‑accredited program or equivalent institution by the time of appointment
  • Experience providing reference, instruction, or outreach services to a diverse population
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collegially in a team setting
  • Demonstrated competency working with computer applications and the ability to learn new software applications
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate to a variety of stakeholders
  • Ability to interact sensitively and effectively in a multi‑cultural environment

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three or more years of relevant experience
  • Experience in or potential for developing and leading engaging library‑related instruction sessions
  • Experience in promoting library‑related programs
  • Experience working in an academic library

SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications, and experience of the individual. The prorated monthly hiring range based on hours (10‑20 per week) and experience is $1,572–$3,144.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • The typical classroom and office environment is in a two‑story building with elevator access

  • A background check investigation (including a criminal records check) is required prior to employment.
