UPMC's Center for Emergency Medicine is hiring Full-Time Communications Specialists to support STAT MedEvac’s Communications Center (STATCOM), located in West Mifflin, PA. The role is split between Communications Specialist I (non‑EMT) and Communications Specialist II (EMT) team members.

New Communications Specialists will start orientation with our UPMC Medical Command. They will assist EMS with physician consults, the transition of patients from the prehospital setting to the hospital, notifying receiving hospitals to prepare for arrival, and dispatching our physician response vehicle. They will also have MCI responsibilities.

After competency validation, they will receive orientation in critical care ground and helicopter dispatch. Responsibilities include obtaining the appropriate information for service requests, collaborating with the Communications Center team, dispatching STAT MedEvac assets, maintaining logs and records, and performing other duties as assigned.

Schedule

(2) 8‑hour and (2) 12‑hour shifts

May work day or night shifts as needed; all new hires will be required to orient to both day and night shifts.

Purpose The Communications Specialist functions as a direct facilitator in processing and executing service requests for the STAT MedEvac system.

Responsibilities

Respond to requests via phone, radio, or other communications methods and assign transport mode (helicopter, fixed wing, ambulance).

Coordinate communications between transport teams, faculty physicians, and referring/receiving hospitals while ensuring confidentiality of patient information.

Serve as a resource and trainer for new STATCOM team members.

Document interventions and patient care information promptly on computer/network systems.

Process request information including demographics and medical necessity; participate in quality improvement programs.

Demonstrate proficiency in dispatch response procedures, attending physician use, and uniform policy; maintain professional appearance.

Complete assigned duties such as shift reports, answering inquiries, reviewing procedures/policies, and maintaining a clean workspace.

Respond promptly to service requests (air and ground) and seek guidance from the Transport Coordinator when needed.

Document unusual operational matters; participate in education and training sessions; complete official documentation timely.

Contribute to safety, including landing zone verification and reporting safety concerns.

Maintain a positive attitude and rapport with customers; report injuries as required; adhere to drug and alcohol policy.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

CPR (AHA standards) within 30 days of hire.

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Act 34.

Must have positive interpersonal communication skills, be willing to work various shifts, and be available for regular on‑call shifts. Emergency operations center dispatch experience preferred but not required.
