Description
The purpose of this classification is to assist staff with circulation desk procedures and materials processing, and to assist patrons as needed. The position requires about 25 hours per week and offers a flexible schedule.
Responsibilities
- Perform customer service functions; greet visitors and direct them to library areas; provide assistance and information related to library services, fees, policies, procedures, general information, and directions.
- Assist patrons with the use of the Alabama Virtual Library, PAC search stations, internet computers, copy machines, and other equipment; assist patrons in locating library materials; research book titles, book availability, patron records, or related information; reserve materials for patrons.
- Issue library cards and update patron records; check in/out books and audio‑visual materials; retrieve materials from book drop; process returns and shelve materials.
- Assist with circulation desk activities involving checking library materials in and out, checking items for damage, emptying book drops, issuing applications and library cards, and maintaining patron records; receive and process books on hold.
- Answer the telephone and provide information or take/relay messages; contact patrons by phone or mail regarding holds or overdue materials.
- Receive and record payments for overdue book fines, donations, and memorials.
- Return library books/materials to appropriate shelving areas; shelve/place materials in proper order; read labels to ensure materials are arranged correctly; search for lost/missing materials; search online catalog to locate materials.
- Operate a personal computer, scanner, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including the use of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e‑mail, internet, or other computer applications; perform basic maintenance of computer system and office equipment, such as backing up data, replacing toner, or refilling paper.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Knowledge of computer data entry systems and word processing applications.
- Skill in starting, stopping, operating and monitoring the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan.
- Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form, including semi‑routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment.
- Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by college‑level coursework or vocational training in personal computer operations; supplemented by five (5) months of previous experience and/or training involving library operations, Dewey Decimal classification, customer service, and personal computer operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses or Certifications: Valid State of Alabama driver’s license.
Must be at least 18 years of age to work for the city and at least 20 years of age to operate city vehicles.
Physical Demands
The work is light and may require the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force. Tasks may involve stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderate‑weight objects. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals, and to communicate orally.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office environment. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
