Job Description

WVTM, the NBC affiliate in Birmingham, AL, has an opening for a Breaking News Anchor. In this role, you will monitor multiple sources for breaking news stories, including wires, social media, and official channels. You will quickly verify information and fact‑check sources to ensure the accuracy and reliability of news reports. Collaboration is essential; you will work effectively with editors, producers, and fellow reporters to prioritize coverage and coordinate resources. You must remain adaptable and responsive to rapidly changing situations, adjusting coverage plans as needed. You will report to the News Director.

Responsibilities

  • Gather information for stories and live reports for newscasts that could include mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Coverage of breaking news, weather, and sports.
  • Swift and accurate reporting on unfolding events, emergencies, and significant developments as they happen during newscasts from the studio.
  • Clear, concise, and engaging writing of breaking news stories for online and broadcast platforms under tight deadlines.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of journalistic ethics and standards, adhering to guidelines for fairness, balance, and impartiality in reporting.
  • Monitor multiple sources for breaking news stories, including wires, social media, and official channels.
  • Quickly verify information and fact‑check sources to ensure the accuracy and reliability of news reports.
  • Utilize multimedia tools and technologies to enhance storytelling and provide comprehensive coverage.
  • Conduct interviews with eyewitnesses, experts, and officials to gather firsthand information.
  • Anchor the midday newscast.

Requirements

  • Three years of professional work as a reporter or anchor.
  • Ability to deal with the stresses and pressures of time‑sensitive newscast production.
  • In‑person attendance is required.
