Division Overview The Division of University Relations (UR) builds public awareness, understanding and support for the university’s mission and goals. UR’s marketing, communications and public affairs units work in an integrated approach to achieve strategic outcomes across multiple channels, including academics, research, enrollment, athletics, advancement, and community engagement.

Position Summary The Editorial Creator will serve as a lead contributor to the university’s magazine and newsroom, dedicating the majority of efforts to generating impactful stories, features, and editorial content. Approximately 70% of this role will focus on researching, writing, and editing for print and digital publications, while 10% supports podcast initiatives and 20% manages experience‑management activities that connect audience data to newsroom narratives.

Essential Functions

Drive the creation of feature stories, news articles, and campus profiles that capture the university’s spirit and achievements across print and digital outlets.

Engage with faculty, staff, and students to uncover and shape meaningful narratives, ensuring all voices are thoughtfully represented.

Advise on content strategy and anticipate opportunities to highlight the university’s evolving story.

Support communications teams in shaping remarks, talking points, and messaging to reflect collected stories.

Create engaging photo and video content to enhance storytelling and foster audience connection.

Experience Management (XM) Integration

Connect insights from experience data with editorial planning, ensuring stories authentically reflect community voices.

Collaborate with XM users and stakeholders to interpret survey results, translating findings into meaningful content themes and story opportunities.

Podcast and Project Management

Coordinate owned project timelines, approvals, and deliverables to keep editorial and media initiatives on track.

Monitor and interpret metrics, using insights to inform future storytelling.

Maintain organized archives of published stories, preserving the university’s narrative for future generations.

Oversee podcast student contributors and support podcast production efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.

Familiarity with AP style and editorial best practices.

Strong organizational and project‑management skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in higher education or mission‑driven organizations.

Familiarity with experience management.

Basic knowledge of SEO and digital publishing practices.

Comfort with interviewing and sourcing stories from diverse stakeholders.

Working Environment

Standard office environment.

Unexpected interruptions occur often; stress level moderate to high.

Noise level quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.

Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
