Position Summary The Design Coordinator role focuses on coordination with internal (such as CPS Energy Gas, Distribution Engineering) and external (customer, general contractor, electrician, plumber) stakeholders for the design of overhead, underground electrical, and gas installations, extensions and system improvements. The position applies specialized knowledge to ensure new construction requests comply with safety and regulatory requirements and designs follow CPS Energy standards for load capacity. The Design Coordinator represents CPS Energy during customer site visits, providing design insight and educating customers about the steps required to move the project forward. The Design Coordinator applies knowledge of project interdependencies to ensure key tasks are initiated, scheduled, and completed on time to achieve project goals, and ensures accurate invoicing and project status updates.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Conduct field inspections to prepare project sites for construction, including stake pole locations and buried utilities.
Complete job sketches and mock-ups for service and meter sets in compliance with CPS Energy standards.
Coordinate with internal construction centers, external agencies, and customers to design installation of overhead and underground line extensions, upgrades, remodels, and gas main extensions for residential and commercial services, including civic improvement projects.
Proactively manage inbound work volumes, estimate time and resources, and prioritize customer needs to meet anticipated project milestones.
Use CPS Energy infrastructure knowledge to assess potential impediments, make decisions, and communicate clear options that meet customer and CPSE requirements.
Remediate project site encroachments and manage site preparation tasks to align with construction release.
Apply specialized knowledge to offer design solutions that maintain delivery timelines and meet regulatory requirements.
Create accurate CIAC invoicing for customer projects and communicate alternatives when necessary.
Apply interpersonal skills to support customers through difficult decisions and manage site preparation tasks.
Maintain technical and professional skills to evaluate project requirements against CPS Energy standards.
Promote CPS Energy goals for transparency and excellence by maintaining awareness of project statuses and mitigating delays.
Follow safety policies and scan work environment for safety risks.
Encourage safe and healthy work practices.
Perform other project activities as assigned.
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities Ability to meet goals and objectives with minimal supervision.
Well‑developed written and verbal communication skills for interaction with the public and all levels of personnel.
Initiative to work independently or as a team member, coordinating with others to achieve desired results.
Ability to work in a variety of locations: field, construction centers, and office.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Ability to set priorities, organize work and recognize when exceptions may be necessary.
Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with customers and support teams.
Effective interpersonal and customer service skills.
Experience in customer invoicing.
Valid Texas Driver’s License and ability to make field visits.
Ability to work overtime, nights, weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications Associate degree with a concentration in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical or related field from an accredited university; in lieu of a degree, experience in residential/commercial utility‑scale distribution planning or residential/commercial utility construction CAD/GIS or other technical experience will be considered.
Depending on business area, preferred knowledge includes:
Overhead and underground electric distribution design and construction standards
Designer/Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Work Management Information System (WMIS), and Customer Information System (SAP)
Single‑phase/three‑phase overhead and underground electric distribution design and construction standards
Downtown Network design and construction standards
Gas design and construction standards
Electric Service Standards
Electric and Gas Line Extension Policies
Relative experience in supporting utility construction & maintenance.
Required Certifications Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, phone, multi‑functioning printer & calculator. Ability to travel to & from meetings, training sessions or other business‑related events.
Physical Demands Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
