The
Referral and Authorization Coordinator
plays a vital role in ensuring a seamless experience for patients and providers alike. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of pre-registration, registration, insurance verification, and pre-certification to guarantee that each patient’s information and authorizations are accurate before their appointment. Acting as a key liaison between patients, primary care offices, and insurance companies, this role ensures every visit begins with confidence and clarity.
Key Responsibilities
Verify patient benefits and obtain necessary
referrals, authorizations, and precertifications
for all ambulatory visits, procedures, injections, and radiology services.
Utilize
web-based systems
to confirm real-time insurance eligibility and update patient demographic and coverage details as needed.
Prepare and maintain patient charts daily to ensure a
smooth and efficient check-in process.
Create and manage referrals, faxing forms to providers and insurance companies promptly.
Efficiently process
75–80 referrals per day
while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
Serve as a reliable resource for
providers and support staff , addressing questions or updates regarding referral status, care coordination, and follow-up actions.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
required; additional healthcare education a plus.
2–3 years of experience
in a healthcare setting, preferably in referrals, billing, or front desk operations.
Strong communication skills and the ability to build professional relationships with physicians, patients, and external partners.
Proven experience handling
managed care insurance , including Medicaid and commercial plans, and a deep understanding of authorization and verification requirements.
