Job Description Library Assistant 3 – time‑limited position with an anticipated duration of December 19, 2025 through December 31, 2026. Regular work hours for Spring and Fall semesters are Sunday night through Friday morning, 11:30 pm–8:30 am; schedule changes during intersession, holidays, and reduced‑hours periods. Summer hours are 2:15 pm–11:15 pm Monday–Thursday, and 12:15 pm–9:15 pm on Friday.
Job Summary As a member of the Marston Science Library Access Services Unit, this role performs a variety of public service, supervisory, technical, and security duties in support of the Smathers Libraries 24‑hour program and the Marston Science Library branch. Responsibilities include overseeing access services and the service desk; supervising student assistants during overnight hours; assisting patrons with library services, circulation, and computer‑related problems; coordinating shift changes with morning and evening staff and security assistants; and ensuring consistent service throughout the night.
Responsibilities
Communicate effectively and provide high‑level customer service to a broad group of patrons.
Supervise, train, and arrange coverage for overnight OPS and student staff.
Provide training and guidance on overnight projects to OPS and student employees.
Assist patrons in using research tools and office equipment, including printers, scanners, and technology.
Handle patron inquiries by telephone, email, and verbal interaction; refer reference questions as appropriate.
Use library policies and procedures to support circulation functions, including checking items out, processing loan returns, recalls, holds, and course reserve items.
Assist with assistance requests and temporary guest account creation.
Respond to interlibrary loan inquiries and the Ares course reserve process.
Serve as a point person for emergency situations and general building security issues.
Maintain the service desk and building during assigned shifts; monitor exit gate alarms and report building issues to management.
Provide backup support for the service desk when other staff are absent.
Lead nighttime projects and workflow; monitor building security and coordinate with team members.
Prepare public and work areas for the morning shift; monitor supplies and request replacements.
Collect and report overnight service data and trends.
Submit maintenance requests via ticketing systems to Academic Technology or Libraries’ IT.
Enforce library and computer use policies; document and respond to problems such as flooding or equipment failures.
Participate in unit and department policy documentation, committees, staff development, and other assigned duties.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent with three years of library or relevant experience; or an Associate's degree with one year of relevant experience; or any combination of experience, training, and/or education that is equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent reliability and proven ability to manage schedule and meet deadlines.
Strong customer service and communication skills, both oral and written.
Ability to supervise and direct the work of others.
Adaptability and initiative for independent work.
Time‑management, organization, and attention to detail.
Experience with call‑number schemes and shelving.
Rapid learning of technology.
