Music, Director of Bands – Full‑Time, Tenure‑Track Assistant/Associate Professor
The University of Central Oklahoma seeks a full‑time Assistant Professor of Band (tenure track) and Director of Bands. The School of Music hosts a diverse range of ensembles, including jazz, musical theatre, piano, strings, vocal arts, and wind/pulse bands. Students pursue BA, BM, BME, and MM degrees under the guidance of a faculty group of 32 full‑time and 35 part‑time members.

Job Description Responsibilities include conducting the UCO Wind Symphony and additional ensembles, leading the UCO band program (concert and athletic bands), and teaching courses in conducting, large‑ensemble literature, rehearsal methodology, and related areas. The successful candidate will recruit and retain students, support student research and creative activity, and contribute to a collaborative faculty environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Extensive performance and conducting experience in bands and wind ensembles.
Ability to teach courses in conductor training, applied conducting, ensemble rehearsal methodology, large‑ensemble literature, and score reading.
Leadership of the band program, coordinating all ensembles and wind groups.
Teaching proficiency across online, face‑to‑face, and hybrid formats.
Excellent communication, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Patient and supportive interactions with students.
Recruiting and retaining students.
Other related duties as assigned.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Additional expertise in areas such as applied low brass, aural skills, theory, music education, or related cognates.
Required Education And Experience
Doctoral degree in music (ABD may be considered).
Strong background in leading academic bands.
Evidence of successful conducting instruction.
Minimum of 3 years of college teaching experience.
Preferred Education And Experience
5 years of college teaching experience.
Successful secondary‑level band instruction and leadership.
Rank This position may be offered at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level depending on the candidate’s experience.
