Hiring Salary Range:

$85,500 – $120,000. Salaries are determined individually depending on skills and experience. You will also be eligible for an annual bonus, employee share investment program (ESIP), pension, benefits, Railroad Retirement Benefits (RRB) and other perks.

Job Summary The Senior Officer, Signals and Communication Design is responsible for Signal Design and is in charge of modifying existing or designing new signal circuits for railway Centralized Traffic Control (CTC). The role oversees all aspects of safe and effective design of circuits, hardware and software for highway crossing and wayside signalling projects, focusing on crossing infrastructure design, estimating and material logistics. The officer applies all government standards and regulations to meet location‑specific requirements.

Main Responsibilities

Primary engineer for signal design projects, handling project budgets, schedules, and quality.

Principal design checker for in‑house and contractor circuit design.

Develop overall design concepts for projects and monitor progress of signal design contractors.

Coordinate with wiring vendors for work order requests for Signals and Communication (S&C) projects.

Work with S&C material coordinators to ensure approved work orders are converted to Purchase Orders (POs) and that all other supporting crossing material is processed and ordered as required.

Field and Technical Support

Provide field and technical support for installing and maintaining crossing warning systems within the railway.

Act as a technical resource for other department personnel in signal design installation and construction functions.

Working Conditions The role is primarily office‑based with a regular Monday‑to‑Friday schedule and intermittent overtime. It also involves partial outdoor work in various weather conditions and requires on‑call availability 24/7 for critical incidents. The incumbent must meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and manage travel (minimal, 10%) within the assigned territory.

Requirements Experience

3 to 5 years of experience designing or testing signal circuits for CTC, interlocking, and highway‑railway grade crossing warning systems.

Experience estimating signal design projects and reviewing projects to meet government regulations, AREMA, and CN’s S&C standards.

Programming logic controllers using Boolean or Ladder logic.

Proficiency in CAD, Bentley MicroStation CONNECT Edition, and Microsoft Project.

Education / Certification / Designation

Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Computer, Electrical, Electronic, Systems Engineering, or Engineering Technology.
